  1. ________________ • Sleep ____________ • _________________ • Night __________ • Sleepwalking Sleeping Disorders

  2. Insomnia: recurring problems in falling or staying asleep • The most common sleep disorder • Not your once in a while, “I have a big test tomorrow,” having trouble getting to sleep episodes – it is a persistent difficulty. • Insomnia is not defined by the number of hours you sleep every night. • Insomnia occurs in 3 different patterns: • Trouble falling asleep • Trouble remaining asleep • Persistent early morning awakening. Insomnia

  3. Estimates of the prevalence of insomnia vary: • It appears that about 34-35% of adults report problems with insomnia • About 15-17% have severe or frequent insomnia. • Prevalence increases with age and is 50% more common in women than in men. Insomnia

  4. Primary versus Secondary insomnia: • Primary insomnia: not related to any other health problem. • Secondary insomnia: can be caused by: • Medical condition (such as cancer, asthma, or arthritis) • Drugs • Stress or a mental health problem (such as depression) • Poor sleep environment (such as too much light or noise, or a bed partner who snores) Insomnia

  5. Figure 5.24: Thoughts and emotions associated with insomnia. This graph depicts the percentage of insomniacs and control subjects reporting various pre-sleep feelings and thoughts. Insomniacs’ tendency to ruminate about their problemscontributing to their sleep difficulties. Figure 5.23: The vicious circle of anxiety and sleep difficulty. Anxiety about sleep difficulties leads to poorer sleep, which increases anxiety further, which in turn leads to even greater difficulties in sleeping. See “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep” – insomnia caused by a brain disorder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1UTw_FWwPk

  6. Figure 5.11: The vicious circle of dependence on sleeping pills. Because of the body’s ability to develop tolerance to drugs, using sedatives routinely to “cure” insomnia can lead to a vicious circle of escalating dependency as larger and larger doses of the sedative are needed to produce the same effect. Sleeping pills are not the answer!

  7. Sleep Apnea: sleep disorder characterized by temporary pause or interruptions of _______________ during sleep and consequent momentary re-awakenings. • Sleep apnea involves frequent, reflexive gasping for air that periodically occurs, waking the person who has it. • The person literally stops breathing for 15 to 60 seconds…can cause heart and lung damage. Sleep Apnea

  8. Causes: • Blocking of air passages • Failure of the brain to control respiration correctly • Can cause high blood pressure & irregular heartbeat Sleep Apnea

  9. Narcolepsy: sudden and irresistible onsets of sleep during normal waking hours. • This can occur while the person is talking, standing up, etc. • Interestingly, the person with Narcolepsy goes directly into REM sleep. • Can last from 5-30 minutes • 250,000 Americans suffer from it Narcolepsy

  11. Children are most prone to: • Night terrors: The sudden arousal from sleep with intense fear accompanied by physiological reactions (e.g., rapid heart rate, perspiration) which occur during Stage 4 sleep. • Different from nightmares – anxiety-arousing dreams – which occur during REM sleep • Sleepwalking: A stage 4 disorder which is usually harmless and unrecalled the next day. • Sleeptalking:A condition that runs in families, like sleepwalking. Sleep Disorders

  12. Sleepwalking • Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder effecting an estimated ________ percent of all humans at least once in their lives. • Almost 4% do on a regular basis • Sleepwalking most often occurs during deep non-REM sleep (stage 3 or stage 4 sleep) early in the night.

  13. The sleepwalking activity may include: • Simply sitting up and appearing awake while actually asleep • Getting up and walking around • Complex activities such as moving furniture, going to the bathroom, dressing and undressing, and similar activities • The episode can be very brief (a few seconds or minutes) or can last for 30 minutes or longer. • One common misconception is that a sleepwalker should not be awakened. • It is not dangerous to awaken a sleepwalker, although it is common for the person to be confused or disoriented for a short time on awakening.
