  1. CHAPTER ONEOn your note-card: Look up the three words you don’t know and write the definitions. In your writer’s notebook: In your vocabulary book: For each word from chapter one: Write the quote with the citation where the word occurs. Draw a picture of what is happening when the word is used. • On the settings page: • Add the Buchanan’s house • Describe the house and what occurs in the house • On the literary devices page: • Find two examples of literary devices in the text • Write the name of the device and the quote with a citation for each literary device.

  2. INSTRUCTIONS – Day Two The Great Gatsby • You need: • Your writer’s notebook • A copy of The Great Gatsby • There will be a reading quiz over chapter one when we finish the chapter.

Example: “Quote” (22). Draw a picture of what is happening during this time in the book. • One Pager #11 • Choose a piece of imagery from chapter five. Think about the descriptions of the characters, of the setting, and of the weather. • Write the quote showing the imagery you’ve selected with a correct citation. • Explain the significance to the novel of the quote you’ve chosen. Be thorough. Consider the conflicts and themes present so far in the novel.

CHAPTERS SEVEN AND EIGHT – A Day In your writer’s notebook: In your vocabulary book: Add the quote for the words from chapters seven and eight (132, 134, 138, 167) Be sure they are correctly cited. Example: “Quote” (22). Draw a picture of what is happening during this time in the book. • One Pager #11 (A-day) #12 (B-day) • Which version of the hotel scene did you find most compelling? • Which do you feel was most accurate to the text? • Explain the changes both directors made to the scene that makes it different from the description in the book. • Why do you think the directors made the changes?

INSTRUCTIONS • You need: • To check the seating chart as it has been updated (see board) • Your writer’s notebook • Your vocabulary booklet • A copy of the novel • To read to the middle of page 143 ( we were on page 141) • Today we will: • Take a chapter seven reading quiz • Watch a clip from the new version of the movie • Write a one-pager • Update vocabulary booklets • Finish chapter seven and read chapter eight independently

Draw a picture of what is happening during this time in the book. • One Pager #13 (B-day) • Explain the changes the director made to the scene that makes it different from the description in the book. • Why do you think the director made the changes? Explain in detail. Consider the differences between readers of the book during the time period it was published and viewers of the 21st century movie.

  13. CHAPTERS NINE – A Day In your writer’s notebook: In your vocabulary book: Add the quote for the words from chapter nine (171, 173). Be sure they are correctly cited. Example: “Quote” (22). Draw a picture of what is happening during this time in the book. • One Pager #12 (A-day) • Look at the quote on page 169 that begins “No telephone message arrived…” • Choose three pieces of diction that reveals a change in the way Gatsby views the world. • Write a text based response explaining HOW why Fitzgerald chose those pieces of diction to communicate the change in Gatsby’s world view. • Remember: • Topic Sentence • Evidence • Commentary
