ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand through a joint statement
(a joint statement in Bangkok) by 5 founders including Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand in order to make economic and political cooperation with the countries in south-east Asia. Currently, ASEAN has a population of 600 million and a land area of 4.5 million km2.
In Khmer Rouge regime, the national economy and human resources declined to zero. Thus, since the collapse of Khmer Rouge regime 1979, the Royal Government of Cambodia has made a concerted effort to restore and develop the economy, social services, and human resources. Meanwhile, general education started in 1980. Public higher education began in late 1980s.
And private higher education commenced in late 1990s. Hence, University of South-East Asia was founded in 2006 to develop human resources to make a contribution to economic and social development.
In 2015, the Royal Government of Cambodia is going to integrate into the ASEAN economic community. Therefore, the Royal Government has been enhancing the quality of education, especially higher education. In the meantime, University of South-East Asia has formulated 5 main strategies to develop human resources in terms of soft skills and technical skills in line with the labor market needs of ASEAN and the region.
