  5. We’re now going to look at the Economic Importance of Tourism. • Tourism is a huge business in the world and both rich and poor countries both want to and both can benefit from the growth of tourism: but how? • tourists bring huge amounts of money with them. According to the London Metropolitan University, in 2006 global tourism was worth US$733 billion! And today, global tourism makes approximately US$3 billion every day! • tourism increases the number of jobs available in the destination and in transport and communication businesses. It is estimated that tourism employs 8% of the global workforce! • tourism encourages huge improvements in the destinations’ infrastructure and public services, so local people benefit as well as the tourists. • tourism has a multiplier effect, which encourages the growth of the surrounding area, other businesses and the economy as a whole.

  6. What exactly is the Multiplier Effect? This is what happens when growth occurs in a region, which is usually started by one single investment, which then snowballs into continued growth, usually both socially and economically. Make your own example of the multiplier effect, starting with this: Geography Island is an island about the same size as Ibiza. It is in the Indian Ocean 300 miles south of Sri Lanka. The people live a very basic life and struggle to survive by exporting sugar cane to other countries and their living conditions are fairly poor. In the summer of 2011, many people travelled to Geography Island to take advantage of the beautiful beaches, the warm weather and exotic food... ... What happened next? (You have 15 minutes to complete your Multiplier Effect example)

  7. ‘Block It’ Review Name 3 facts that you’ve learnt today. Name 2 things you’ve remembered from previous lessons. Name 1 thing you’d like to know more about.

  8. Homework (Due : ) Create an illustrated version of your multiplier effect story about Geography Island. You must draw a map of the island (or part of it) with pictures of tourist activities, showing infrastructure, hotels, airports etc, with reasons for their location and why they were built there. You must write a sentence or two about how the island may change and develop in the future.
