  1. Map Skills Look and Learn

  2. In this activity you will: • Learn about the elements of a map: latitude, longitude, the hemispheres, directions, time zone, scale, and map legends.

  3. A map is a drawing that shows regions on a flat surface

  4. Latitude and Longitude • The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude.

  5. Lines • Longitude lines run north and south. • Latitude lines run east and west. • The lines measure distances in degrees. Latitude Longitude

  6. Where is 0 degree? • The equator is 0 degree latitude. • It is an imaginary belt that runs halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole. Equator

  7. P R I M E M E R I D I A N Where is 0 degree? • The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, western Africa, and Antarctica.

  8. Hemispheres • By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.

  9. Scale • Maps are made to scale; that is, there is a direct connection between a unit of measurement on the map and the actual distance. • For example, each inch on the map represents one mile on Earth. So, a map of a town would show a mile-long strip of fast food joints and auto dealers in one inch.

  10. Scale

  11. Time Zones • The Earth is divided into 24 time zones, corresponding to 24 hours in a day. • As the earth rotates, the sun shines in different areas, moving from east to west during the course of a day. • Places that have the same longitude will be in the same time zone.

  12. Religions Legend Map Legends • The legend is the key to unlocking the secrets of a map. Objects or colors in the legend represent something on the map.

  13. Can you understand this legend?

  14. Legend Age Expectancy

  15. Global Grids • Show latitude and longitude lines

  16. Locator Globes • Shows where the area of a map is found

  17. Reading maps gives useful information

  18. Political maps show political areas

  19. Physical maps show features of the land

  20. Elevation maps are physical maps

  21. Relief maps are physical maps

  22. Using maps can be fun.

  23. What are 2 kinds of physical maps?

  24. What city is located at: 25 south 50 west MontevideoBrasiliaCuritibaBelem

  25. 66 1/2 degrees north is: • Tropic of Capricorn • Tropic of Cancer • Equator • Prime Meridian • Arctic Circle • Antarctic Circle

  26. 23 ½ north latitude is: • Tropic of Capricorn • Tropic of Cancer • Equator • Prime Meridian • Arctic Circle • Antarctic Circle

  27. 0 degree longitude is: • Tropic of Capricorn • Tropic of Cancer • Equator • Prime Meridian • Arctic Circle • Antarctic Circle

  28. These lines of latitude are called the Middle Latitudes or the Temperate Zone. • Latitudes between 23 ½ north and 23 ½ south. • O degrees longitude. • Latitudes between 66 n and the n pole and 66 s and the south pole • Latitudes between 23 ½ n and 66 n and between 23 ½ s and 66 s.

  29. These latitude lines are called the Tropics or the Low Latitudes. • Latitudes between 23 ½ north and 23 ½ south. • O degrees latitude • Latitudes between 66 n and the n pole and 66 s and the south pole • Latitudes between 23 ½ n and 66 n.

  30. What lines run vertically (north to south) and meet at the north and south poles? • Latitude Lines • Longitude Lines • Parallels • Prime Meridian

  31. What lines run horizontally (east to west) around globe and never touch? • Longitude Lines • Meridians • Latitude Lines • Prime Meridian
