  1. > You know, it looks like a LOT of people have this error, from looking at my

  2. > mailbox over the last month or so! I have some ideas about why that is.

  3. > Barry wrote that he couldn't reproduce it on his machine, so perhaps they

  4. > have turned it off in later versions... I am still on 8.8.7... Anyway, this

  5. > is the Sendmail that comes on the RedHat distribution... I think at least a

  6. > few people will have it.

  7. It still happens in sendmail 8.9.3 for me, and yes, you are 100% right

  8. about why it happens.

  9. > This is further explained on sendmail.org at the following URL:

  10. > http://www.sendmail.org/faq/section3.html#3.15

  11. I personally feel that it's a bug on sendmail's part; according to the

  12. sendmail "bat" book, only aliases that use the 'include:' directive

  13. have the envelope rewritten, yet it appears to happen with *any*

  14. alias -- be it a pipe, redirect, or whatever.

  15. > If the default behavior is left alone, at the very least this info should

  16. > make it into the documentation (under "Troubleshooting" in the "Why doesn't

  17. > member_posting_only work?"). If you go to the trouble of instructing

  18. > people how to turn off the envelope sender option, why not educate them

  19. > about the problem they're likely to be having first?

  20. >

  21. > I have removed all my owner-* aliases (actually, having learned my lesson

  22. > from the listproc days, I never put them in) and envelope sender works fine.

  23. I'm not contesting that it works for you -- just wanted to get that

  24. clear first. :) However, I have had people send mail to owner-listname

  25. in the past because it's sort of an unofficial standard. Usually they're

  26. people who have heard about the list from somewhere else and want to know

  27. how to subscribe, have a question about archives, or whatever.

  28. I want to know why the sendmail folks are rewriting envelopes anyway... Sounds

  29. like a perfectly acceptable candidate for a sendmail.cf flag (it's not like they

  30. haven't added every other setting under the sun. :)

  31. Sorry. I think I'm tired... I just hate making exceptions for software that

  32. changes the rules...
