Promotion to Full Professor Definitions of Excellence • The candidate's accomplishments in rank have had impact at the national level. • The candidate is recognized nationally and/or internationally for contributions to his/her field. • The candidate has a sustained national reputation as demonstrated by a well-established and cumulative body of work while in rank as an Associate Professor. • Distinguished contributions must be evident (IU Academic Handbook, 2008).

Promotion to Full Professor What You MUST Do… • Consult your School-specific guidelines and the IUPUI Dean of the Faculties Guidelines for Promotion & Tenure • Know what constitutes excellence in your primary mission. • Know what constitutes satisfactory achievements in your secondary missions.

  6. Promotion to Full Professor Excellence • Scholarship MUST be associated with your area of excellence. • National impact must be associated with your area of excellence. • National reputation for your work in your area of excellence.

  7. Promotion to Full Professor Teaching Excellence in Brief • Extraordinary success in teaching, advising, mentoring and learning outcomes • Documented by peer and student evaluation over time with evidence of the impact on student performance • Sophisticated teaching philosophy that is reflective, innovative and evolved over time • Record of nationally and/or internationally disseminated, peer-reviewed, high quality scholarship with impactful outcomes and contributions to field • National or international teaching awards or significant funding for teaching projects or best practices

Promotion to Full Professor Research Excellence in Brief • Evidence of dissemination of high quality scholarly work including peer-refereed presentations, publications in top tier journals with 1st or senior authorships • Significant contributions to the knowledge base in field that improved the work of others • National/international recognition of expertise and quality of work; participation in grant & manuscript review • Significant acquisition of external funding from competitive, valued sources • Evidence of independent, ongoing program of research with successive cumulative achievements • Leadership roles, awards and honors

Promotion to Full Professor Service Excellence in Brief • Evidence of dissemination of high quality scholarly work including peer-refereed presentations & publications in service • Awards and recognition that reflect the significance and academic nature of the service • National/international recognition of the quality of the service work and leadership in service • Evidence of significant impact and outcomes of service • Invited presentations because of expertise in service • Leadership in national organizations and/or development of best practice standards

Promotion to Full Professor Librarian Excellence in Brief • Record of superior performance as an associate librarian and attainment of state, regional, or national recognition in the library profession • Record of exceptional achievements in performance and a record of distinguished contributions to the university, profession, or community in the secondary area of excellence. Professional development, research and/or creativity and service are secondary criteria. • Performance and contributions to the secondary area must be carefully documented so that the quality is unquestionable and extraordinary in relation to peers.
