  3. Wise Use of Floodplains • Local communities must decide what’s the “wise use” of their own floodplains • DWR can’t dictate local land use decisions • However, DWR can ask that you consider:

  4. Wise Use of Floodplains • Will your decisions place residents in “harm’s way?”

  5. Wise Use of Floodplains • Are short-term economic gains jeopardized by catastrophic future failures and/or increasingly expensive structures to maintain?

  6. Wise Use of Floodplains • Will short-term economic gains forgo other land uses that potentially could become more valuable over time (such as preserving limited open space)?

  7. Wise Use of Floodplains • Will decisions adversely affect others?

  8. Wise Use of Floodplains • Will decisions expose community to increased liability?
