Rise of Hitler • Adolf Hitler • Officer in the German army in WWI • Twice awarded the Iron Cross for bravery • A super nationalist • Hated the Treaty of Versailles • Post-WWI joins a tiny political group called the National Socialist German Workers Party • Aka NAZI Party • First attempt to seize power in 1923 Beer Hall Putsch • Plan fails, and he is forgotten when Dawes Plan fixes economy

Hitler Gains Power • 1929 Great Depression • German economy collapses • People once more turn to Hitler and the Nazis • Weimar President Paul von Hindenburg tries to control Nazis • 1933 Hindenburg names Hitler Chancellor to keep a better eye on him • 1934 Hindenburg dies, Hitler gains absolute power
