  1. Do Now • Are you good at knowing when someone is lying to you? • Name 3 ways you can tell when someone is lying

  2. Forensic Psychology Polygraphs

  3. 25 MINUTES • Finish the packet from yesterday • This will involve working quickly & efficientlyfor the ENTIRE time. • Timer will be up on the board for you

  4. Polygraphs • Intend to catch lies by measuring skin responses • BP, HR, sweat, breathing • Controversial & contradictory results • Guilty Knowledge Test (GKT): higher reactions when unpublished info is shown to criminals

  5. Today’s Lesson: How to Detect Lies! • Disclaimer: NONE OF THESE are going to work 100% of the time. These are general trends.

  6. Body Language • Limited hand movements • Avoid eye contact • Hands touch face, throat, eyes & mouth • Will not likely touch their chest with the palm of their hand

  7. Emotional Gestures • Timing is off between emotions/words • Ex: “I love it!” then a smile after • Gestures don’t match verbal statements • Ex: Frowning when saying “I love you!” • Expressions limited to mouth movements, not whole face

  8. Interactions/Reactions • Defensive • Uncomfortable facing questioner – may turn away • May place objects between you

  9. Speech • Indirect statements • Fill in silence • A statement with a contraction is more likely to be truthful: I didn’t do it > I did not do it • Monotonous

  10. Microexpressions • Involuntary facial movements reveal hidden emotions • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EXm6YbXxSYk • Anyone could be trained to find them, but some people are naturals • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiGVKl_ieZQ

  11. Poster: Are You Being Lied To? • Working in pairs • On your poster, give at least 2 ways to spot a lie in each category… • Body Language • Personal Gestures • Interactions/Reactions • Speech • Microexpressions
