Why the iPad resonates with SLPs • Multi-purpose tool - it can do anything! • We can write with it (our computer/notepad) • We can capture pictures/video (our camera) • We can capture recordings (our tape recorder/transcription) • Our tool box in the back of our cars is gone • Students motivated to use it - "mirrors are out, but recording is in!" • We can immediately share information with others • We can save information so students/clients can use it later • Familiar technology - many of us have experience with it already • It's cool!

Challenges we face Not a computer - some major differences to our old ways of thinking • No USB input • Not designed as a storage device - limited capabilities • No "mouse" input - where's the cursor! Different for clients with access issues • Small screen - how to I put on a larger one? • Loading and unloading of "software"

New things we need to learn • How do I save or store information? • How do I use the iPad for group teaching? • What is the best way to bring information into the iPad? • What is the bet way to get information OUT? • What apps really are useful for my population? How do I find out about these? • How do I manage a school or hospital owned device, but I want to put my own apps on it? • How do I keep track of what I have?

12. Some basic rules • Yes, we have WiFi access and you can search and play while we learn, but I love to see faces! Please watch essential information first and then experiment or face the consequences! • I want to cover a lot of information today with therapists who work with very diverse populations • not everything will be applicable to your exact situation • you may not "master" ever single idea or app • Develop a strategy to take notes for those items that you need to return to later - Notes, Reminders, Sticky Notes • We are going to cover an EXPLOSION of apps - this workshop is designed to briefly highlight unique features, not teach the app completely

14. The basics • iPad will "hibernate" and keep a charge for up to 11 hours - you don't need to always turn it off • Volume buttons on side or in "hidden screen" - know your mute! • "Home" (or quit) button on the bottom - double click for hidden screen and to quickly switch between apps • scroll to the left on the hidden screen for volume, brightness and music • iPad will automatically rotate to position - double click to lock in place - you can change this in Settings

15. Know your settings • Many controls can be modified in this panel • Individual apps have their own settings - also in this control panel • substantially upgraded in OS-5 and 6 • become familiar with the features here that you need so that you can quickly move in and out and work efficiently

16. OS 6 features you should know • Speak Selection • Large Text • Bluetooth • ICloud • Keyboarding shortcuts • Guided Access • Dictation (new iPad) - not Siri

17. Find my iPad • Free feature - you can find your iPad from any other computer or OS device • www.icloud.com • After you set up a free iCloud account, you then make sure your location services are on

App Management • Double click on "home" to open up bottom - recently used apps • Force quit apps that are frozen or get stuck • Put most-used apps down below in docking station • Put "teacher" apps on another screen • Turn off deleting apps or purchasing of apps in restrictions • Lose an app? No worries - quickly reload it

19. Know your App Store • Manage your apps on your iPad • You can have multiple iTunes accounts on a single iPad (teacher, personal, student) • Don't worry - you won't "lose" any apps • Know how to switch in and out of iTunes accounts

Sky Mall shopping... • Think of buying apps like sky mall shopping - the App Mall in the clouds • You can create your own store - tied to your Apple ID • You can have as many stores as you want - as long as you can manage them • Apps live on the shelves - not on your device! You can move them around as often as you like

21. App Management • Computer search or directly in iPad • Know some good teacher blogs or websites to follow • Gift cards versus apple volume pricing • Think a plan through before starting to purchase • Whoever purchases the app - OWNS the app • Know how to retrieve and remember your apps

Email • Select the account type for your email service • Multiple accounts can be accessed • Email is one way to deliver information from your computer to your iPad - the most common • set up a free email account for your setting to use to share files/pictures • Turn email off and on in settings to protect privacy

Photos • Sync with computer for large files • Email to yourself for individual • You can email up to 5 photos at a time from your iPad • Google search - easiest way if you don't have a camera (iPad1) Hold down your finger on picture - select "save image" Image will be stored in photos • Organize photos into albums for easy retrieval • Screen shots! • Convert to PDF or use program that allows you to write on it directly - photo to PDF - Doodle buddy - PDF Expert

25. Notetaking features • One feature of the iPad - it's ability to use typing, handwriting, pictures or recording features on notes • Great and simple for recording lessons • Some suggestions: AudioMemos, Voice Memos, AudioNote, Notability

How to save information • Different than computers - OS devices are not meant to store lots of information • The plus - you don't "lose" anything • Cloud-based filing - new mentality • Know multiple ways - not every app is consistent with every method • Some apps have their own backup system with passwords

27. Dropbox • Free download at www.dropbox.com • 2GB of free space - fee if over • On your computer, you will see a dropbox folder - save work into this folder • It will appear in your iPad under the dropbox application • You can share folders with others • You can access online • Dropbox requires Wi-Fi to transfer information but not to use

28. GoDocs • Works with Google account and Google docs • You can download and open in another app • You can save it back in Google docs or as a PDF or text document

29. iWork • Document storage through your iTunes account (iCloud) • Only works with Pages, Numbers, Keynote • Limited storage, then payment • iCloud customers are provided with 5 GB of free cloud storage. Purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books, as well as photos in your Photo Stream don't count against your 5GB of free storage. • you can use any commonly used Microsoft tools to open

30. Passwords, Passwords! • Remember them! Each storage app usually requires a password • Develop a consistent system to save them • Keeper - free app to store all passwords securely

31. Accessories, Accessories • Cases - an array of choices - depends on how you are using it - bluetooth keyboards in the case • Speakers - bluetooth/cabled choices • Projection - • wireless options or "dongle" • Only iPad2s or higher • stylus options

39. Criteria for app selection • Is it modifiable? Can you add your own information? • Can you save data? • Can you easily send the data? • Does it take the place of another tool or group of tools? • Does it make a difference?

40. Use your resources • Free or Lite versions - usually access to only a few portions • Read reviews! • Look at screen shots • Developer information - a list of all the other apps that the company/person makes • YouTube videos - not just for goofy movies!

Versatile apps for any SLP • Pictello, Book Creator, Story Maker- create your own talking stories - interactive lessons - social stories • GoTalk NOW - traditionally an AAC app, but has features that make it a great teaching tool • Talking Flashcards- for review of vocabulary • Skype/Cloud Talk/FaceTime - video and voice interaction • Vimeo - video sharing/storing with password protection • Voice Dictation - Rapidly becoming an SLP responsibility

42. Data Collection • Clock/Time Timer - visual time limits • Tally Counter/Percentally- record data • Web based collections: IEPPal, eCove • Other apps address student data along with IEP dates, goals and progress
