  3. drought • Noun • Time of little or no rain • Example: It hadn’t rained in 5 years, this drought made several animals die of thirst.

  4. scorched • Adj • Burned on the surface • Example: The river burned like fire along its scorched banks.

  5. craved • Verb • Needed very badly • Example: But even after the jar was empty, he craved more water.

  6. pierced • Verb • Touched deeply • Example: His mother’s cries pierced his heart.

  7. flourished • Verb • Grew very well • Example: She told him how the crops flourished and how lush the land was.

  8. cause • Why an event happened • Example: I didn’t study for the quiz.

  9. effect • What happens as a result • Example: I didn’t study for the quiz, that’s why I got all 13 questions wrong.
