  1. VfL’s History (1) • Born out of VHA (Vegetarian Housing Association) • VHA operated retirement homes for older vegetarians & vegans • Model no longer viable • Residents re-housed and homes closed • Funds available to help older vegetarians and vegans

  2. VfL’s History (2) • VHA recognised need for advocacy services for older vegetarians • Decided to set up new charity • VfL registered as Company & Charity - Summer 2007 • Company Secretary / Manager:Tina Fox • Trustees: Peter Lakey, David Pye and Diane Moreton

  4. Progress (1) • Launched in National Vegetarian Week, May 2008 • Patron - Rose Elliot • Website www.vegetarianforlife.co.uk

  6. Progress (2) • Published Catering for older vegetarians and vegans– a 32 page guide • Aimed at care homes, retirement schemes and others catering for older people • Includes Recipes, Menu Planners and lots of practical advice • Distributed to 14,000 care homes across UK

  8. Progress (3) • Established VfL-UK List - of care homes and other caterers - who agree to follow the VfL Code of Good Practice - and cater ethically for older vegetarians • Membership reached 100 around launch • Now 221 members – across England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland

Progress (4) • Set up Advisory Panel: - Dr Justine Butler ( Senior Health Campaigner, Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation) - Carol Gilligan ( Residential Care Home Manager) - Christine Heron ( Specialist in Health/ Social Care) - Sandra Hood ( Dietitian, Bsc Hons, RD) - Dr Annette Pinner ( CEO, Vegetarian Society) - Nigel Winter ( CEO, Vegan Society)

  10. VfL works with: • Vegetarian Society, Vegan Society, Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation, IVU • Age Concern, Help the Aged, WRVS • National Association of Care Caterers, Counsel and Care, UK Homecare Association • A number of major care & housing groups e.g. MHA, Elizabeth Finn Homes, The Orders of St John Care Trust • And we are working continuously to increase our influence

  11. Future Plans • Christmas Leaflet with Rose Eliott recipes • Catering guide for hospitals and hospices • Presentation to Hospital Caterers Association in January 2009 • Working with WRVS to develop their new private catering to replace meals on wheels
