  1. The American Revolution:The Road to War In reaction to the suspension of the General Assembly, the General Committee of 99 created a new governing body called the Provincial Congress. January 1775 it approved the actions of the FCC and made plans to implement the Continental Association, elect representatives to the Second Continental Congress, and established a stronger militia.

  2. The British are Coming • 1774, SC and the other colonies readied for war. • By April 1775 they would have it. • British troops under General _______________ left Boston to seize gunpowder and arms from the colonists in __________. • They were awakened by the cries of riders such as ______ ________ and ______ ______ riding through the countryside yelling “the British are coming”.

The British are Coming • The first two battles of the American Revolution would be fought at ______________ and __________. • The war began when someone yelled “fire” no one knows who, but, and this is a BIG BUT, the killing of several colonists only made them more determined to fight. • At Concord, the British fighting in traditional fashion of straight lines were forced to retreat without the gunpowder, because the colonists fighting Indian style hid behind rocks and trees. • The shots fired at Concord has been called “____________________” because it was the beginning of change throughout the world.

South Carolina’s First Constitution • To give the _______ ________ official and legal recognition, in November 1775, wanted to establish rules on how they should operate. • Representatives at the SCC recommended that they write a _______________ and set up a temporary government. • February 1776, they wrote what was supposed to be a temporary constitution, until the disagreement with Britain was over. • With ratifying of this constitution SC was no longer a colony, but and this is a BIG BUT, a ______.

South Carolina’s First Constitution • The Constitution of 1776 established a __________ legislature, this means they liked both electing members to a lower and an upper house. • The houses together elected a ___________ of the state who was given the power of ____. • The Downers had more representatives even though there were more whites in the Up Country. • This was done on purpose to keep the government in the hands of the ___________.

The Declaration of Independence • At the SCC by June 1776 were debating independence. • The SC representatives were Edward Rutledge, Thomas Lynch, Jr., Thomas Heyward, and Arthur Middleton. • They called off a vote on independence for 3 weeks until all colonial legislatures could be consulted. • 3 weeks later the Congress debated whether to sign the Declaration of Independence. • SC did not vote for independence. • For SC’ers agreeing on independence came as a surprise, no one knows for sure why this happened. • They announced that this was now a war of independence.
