  2. Objectives: • Learn how the Walk-Through Process and tool supports asset implementation and using data for improvement; • Conduct a Walk-Through and do an abbreviated debrief • Know why it is valuable and how others have used it

  3. Conversation Starter What does your RJKCCC do to collect and use data for improvement?

  4. Continuous Improvement means: • getting and using information to get better, and • evaluating changes to make sure they were effective.

  5. CI requires: • Good information about your environment from a variety of sources • Pulling people together from different levels and areas • Systematic ways to measure progress and outcomes of your changes • A real desire to do it, even if it means changing power relationships

Walk-Throughs • A structured observation process to assist a program community in getting smarter about being asset-rich. • Provide concrete feedback for program and/or site improvement – not evaluation of individual staff or the effort as a whole. • Are never a stand-alone event used to “showcase” or “evaluate” the work of staff and young people. • Are always preceded by a comprehensive staff training or orientation to the Developmental Assets • An efficient way to use administrator time.

Walk-Throughs • Bring people together and introduce the concept • Identify the key asset categories to be examined + concrete indicators • Conduct the walk-through & take detailed notes (collect data) • Summarize findings and rate (individually); then as an observation team • Report findings (or share data) • Discuss (making meaning of data) • Do the cycle again

  8. Conducting the Walk-Through • Use detailed descriptions • Do not use specific names (generic roles) • View Interactions and Artifacts through one or more of the developmental asset categories • Short conversations are fine • Use quotes when appropriate

  9. Following the Walk-Through Re-assemble to review and synthesize observations. Step 1: Each team member completes the rating column on his/her own observation form. Step 2: One team member agrees to be the notetaker and record the team’s conclusions on a “master observation form.” Step 3: Team members verbally share their ratings and observations used to substantiate them and come to consensus on one rating for each indicator. Step 4: Team members synthesize their narrative observations into short statements (a minimum of 1 per indicator). Determine method of sharing findings and facilitating a discussion based on the data.

Results: Increase knowledge and awareness (assets, data, systemic improvement) Build skills (observation, data collection, sharing data, interpreting and making meaning of findings with others, adjusting plans) Inform professional development, new activities, involvement of partners, adjustment of plans/practices
