Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies Background: BC Hydro was the only energy provider in British Columbia for over 75 years 7000 employees providing water, gas and electricity to the province Network Computing Services (NCS) in BC Hydro was the technological support to the whole operation

  3. Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies • NCS: 200 employees, 9 senior managers and a director, 14 middle managers • 3600 feedback process for on leadership competencies for senior managers—”average” results • Purpose: to improve their leadership

  4. Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies Leadership Competencies (from 3600 Review: • creating a shared vision • leading by example • facilitating and fostering teamwork • creating and promoting a service-oriented culture and • communicating effectively.

Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies The purpose of the coaching was to • Increase retention • Improve managers’ communication and strategic planning skills • Promote work-life balance and overall job satisfaction among managers • Empower managers to use creative approaches to motivate employees

  8. Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies Process for Coaching Program: • Meeting with managers to explain coaching and the opportunity • Selection of group of professional, certified coaches • Meeting with coaches to provide overview of leadership goals

Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies Process, continued… • Managers interviewed up to 6 coaches and chose their coach • Individual coaching (one on one) took place for 6 months, with an option to renew for another 6 months • Ongoing monitoring of the coaching (maintaining confidentiality)

Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies • After 6 months, all senior managers and director renewed for another 6 months • After 1 year, the senior managers extended the coaching opportunity to all managers in the department (14) • All 14 frontline managers chose coaches and were coached for 6 months, and the senior managers continued coaching

Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies • In the middle of the coaching program, it was announced that NCS would be taken over by Accenture, as part of a bigger merger • Focus of coaching now included: preparing for change anticipated in the merger with a larger company

Coaching is a valuable business tool for planning and implementing strategies Results of Coaching-Senior Managers: • After one year, senior managers did another 3600 review • All had overall improvement—some moved from 3 to 5 on a 5 point scale • Two managers won performance awards from BC Hydro
