  3. Uses for a Rabbit • Meat • People in Europe use them • High Protein, low in fat and sodium • Research • Help fight human diseases and produce fighting antibodies • Draize eye test • Fur/Wool • Use it to make Clothes • Pets

  4. Description • 13 to 18 inch. long • Weighs 3 to 5 lbs • Hind legs relatively long • Smooth fur • Make good pets • Very clean • Gentle • Loveable • Trained • For a litter box

  11. Housing • Wire cages • Different sizes for the size of the rabbit • Easy to clean because everything is dropped in a tray below the cage • For larger rabbit may need to clean cage daily • Need the right temp, humidity, ventilation and proper light

  12. Housing cont. • If rabbit is to hot from temp or humidity • Can overheat and become very uncomfortable • Fresh air keeps the rabbit healthy and productive • Prevents respiratory problems

  13. Feeding • Buy specially prepared pellet-type feeds • Main ingredient is alfalfa meal • Treats • Carrots, slices of apples, green beans, pieces of banana and pineapple • No green leafy vegetables! • Causes diarrhea and dehydration • Rabbits eat own feces • Called coprophagy

  14. Reproduction • Usually have 30 to 40 babies a year • Breeds from May to Oct. • 30 days for a litter • Sexually mature at 5 to 8 months • 4 to 12 in a litter

  15. Training • Its hard to train your rabbit • Train it to come to you • Have to continuously work with it and do it • Use treats and call it by his or her name • Train it to use a litter box • Must spay or neuter the rabbit first

  16. Interesting Facts • 180 Breeds worldwide • Pet rabbits usually live longer than wild rabbits • Rabbits don’t vomit • Rabbits teeth always grow • Can run up to 35 mph
