  8. Relay on the Lake

  9. WHAT: The first ever Relay For Life held on a lake. WHERE: Lake of the Woods is the largest inland freshwater lake in North America and is approximately 90 miles long and 60 miles wide. RELAY TEAMS: Ten teams of 137 people and about 20 survivors participated in the Relay. Because of the geography of islands, coordination of the relay was accomplished by boat, marine band radio, island passenger service deliveries, “drop off points” at strategic locations, and extremely creative teamwork. LUMINARIA CEREMONY: The Luminaria Ceremony was conducted over the Marine Band Radio. Luminaria were lit by “glowsticks” rather than the traditional candles to avoid any fire hazard. Luminaria were also placed on two islands across the Canadian Border by area residents wishing to participate. FUNDRAISING RESULTS: This small group of people in this remote area raised over $36,000 in the “Top of the Nation Relay for Life of the Lake.” That means these 120 residents will have raised over $250 per capita!
