  1. Religious Studies AS/A Level Distance learning: reconciling depth with diversity in AS/A Level Religious Studies

Religious Studies • A critical and academic, but sympathetic, study of religions and issues related to religion • Brings together different types of students in dialogue: ‘believers’, ‘sceptics’ and others from different religious backgrounds • A Level specifications offer a huge range of options • R.S. syllabuses require in-depth study at A Level, but students have differing needs and interests. Distance learning can help schools to avoid the lowest common denominator.

  3. The AS R.S. course • Provides opportunity for choice (by whole group of students) of 2 out of 3 options: • Buddhism • Christianity OR Islam • Philosophy of Religion • Students start with general introduction to world religions, then choose 1 of 3 religions to study • The second module on Philosophy of Religion can be related to any of the religions, OR a second religion can be studied instead

The A2 R.S. course • The current course brings students who have studied different religions at AS together in shared study of Philosophy of Religion themes: • Philosophy of Religion: evil, language and personal identity • Life Death and Beyond: the value of life, facing death, afterlife beliefs • It is hoped to also introduce choices at A2 in future

The benefits of R.S. for students • Allows thoughtful exploration of some of life’s key issues • Helps develop tolerance and awareness of others’ beliefs • A Level R.S. is a good preparation for a wide range of humanities and social science degrees at university • Subject matter used in degrees in Theology and/or Religious Studies, as well as Philosophy and Oriental Studies • Useful in social work, police and teaching as well as specific religious vocations

  6. Why offer R.S. by distance learning? • Bring flexibility into your AS/A Level RS provision • Provide an alternative option alongside your conventionally-taught syllabus • Provide a course for a small group of students, that could not otherwise be staffed • Meet legal requirements for RS provision in the sixth form
