  5. Periodization Early Middle Ages: 500 – 1000 High Middle Ages: 1000 – 1250 Late Middle Ages: 1250 - 1500

  7. After the Western Roman Empire falls to Germanic invaders there is a decline in safety, centralized government, and there is constant warfare and invasion.

  8. Middle Ages Not a great time to live in because: • constant threat of attack • nutrition is poor and famines are common • learning drops and most people cannot read • drop in culture • social ranks become rigid/unmovable

  9. Medieval Church • Roman Catholic Church helps to keep Europe together under the Christian religion. • People during the middle ages are very religious and many people go to church every day. • Monks and Nuns----run schools, hospitals, libraries

  16. Feudalism • Landowners (kings or lords) give a piece of theirLAND to other lords in return for LOYALTY and MILITARY SERVICE. • Under Feudalism, peasants (serfs) FARM the lord's land in return for PROTECTION and the ability to farm part of the lord's land for themselves

  21. Agricultural Achievements • 1) better plows • 2) horseshoes for horses • 3) Three field system - fields planted were wheat, legumes (or veggies), and one field was left fallow.  This way the soil would renew its nutrients and keep pumping out huge amounts of food :)

  27. Crusades

  28. The Crusades were a holy war to regain the Holy Land (Jerusalem and other regions where Jesus of Nazareth had lived) from the Muslims who controlled that region.

  29. Timeline • 1054- Spilt between eastern and western Christianity • 1070-Jerusalem taken by Muslims (Turks) • 1096- Pope Urban II- start the Crusades • Why Pilgrimages were very popular and did not want Muslims control the Holy Land

  30. The Crusades • First Crusades (1095-1101) -25,000-30,000 people Plundered and slaughtered Jews and Muslims Regained Jerusalem • Second- 1145-47 Jerusalem lost to Saladin (Muslims)

  31. Third (1188-92) - Won back land but not Jerusalem • Richard the Lionheart makes treaty • Fourth (1204) • Captured Constantinople for Latin Church • Many holy relics • Later Crusades failed and stopped in 1291

  32. A Successful Failure • The Crusades' main goal of reconquering the Holy Land from the Muslims ends in failure! • However successful because they: • 1) Introduce Europe to new learning and inventions (Muslims) • 2) Restarts European trade with the rest of the world

  33. 3) Helps unity of Europeans by reducing fighting among European nobles (most leave to fight crusades) • 4) End of Feudalism- rise of cities /end of serfs • 5) Europe is no longer isolated from other continents (learning increases---Greek) • 6) Trade increases population of Europe Negative---Persecutions of the Jews

  39. Japan and Feudalism • FEUDALISM DEVELOPS WHEN: • There is a lack of a centralized government • When there is a general lack of order and chaos results

  40. Geography • Japan is an ARCHIPELAGO, or chain of islands • The waters that surround Japan ISOLATE it and prevented armies from invading • The water also allowed for CULTURAL DIFFUSION from Korea and China.

  41. Religion • The native religion of Japan is SHINTO • It has no HOLY BOOKS • It is based on the worship of KAMI, or NATURE spirits • The Japanese believed that their emperor was a GOD

  42. Power • EMPERORS have no actual power  They are FIGUREHEADS

  43. BUSHIDO  The Samurai warrior code – based on honor- it demanded that a samurai be loyal to his lord and practice self-discipline. • If a samurai lost his honor he would commit hari-kiri or ritual suicide. This would return honor to the samurai and his family

How was Japanese Feudalism different from European Feudalism? • In Europe lords and their vassals had a LEGAL or law-based agreement. • In Japan the connection between a samurai and their daimyo was based on MORALITY (what is right/wrong), or believing it was the right thing to do. • JAPAN WAS AN HONOR- BASED SOCIETY
