  8. Considerations • Avidyne or G-1000 ? • Is an all-glass panel safer than a conventional panel ? • How much training is required to be competent and safe ? • What happens when the panels go dark? We’ll come back to discuss these important questions later on

Terminology • TAA – Technically Advanced Aircraft • PFD – Primary Flight Display • MFD – Multi-Function Display • FITS – FAA Industry Training Standards (e.g. TAA with PFD/MFD) • ADAHRS or ADAHARS – Air Data Altitude Heading and Reference System • GPS – Global Positioning System • GPSS – GPS Steering

  11. Avidyne PFD • The Avidyne PFD incorporates the functionality of: • Airspeed Indicator • Attitude Indicator • Altimeter • VSI • HSI (HI & VOR/LOC)

  12. Avidyne – PFD(2) • The display is integrated with an Air Data / Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) • Three axis solid state gyro system • Provides: • Pitch • Roll • Heading

  13. Avidyne – PFD(3) • Turn Coordinator • Scale show extending from either side of digital heading representation • Graduations for half and full standard rate turn • Blue bar extends into scale as turn is entered

Differences • G1000 has speed bugs • Vr, Vx, Vy, and Vg (best glide) • G1000 CDI has “memory” of the course for each selection (Avidyne does not) • G1000 has map / FPL inset, Avidyne overlays course on HIS • Avidyne integrates altitude / VSI with AP (G1000 – future) • G1000 arc mode is horrible

Differences • G1000 integrates GPS into the unit (Avidyne uses external G430s) • Avidyne MFD needs separate database update • G1000 have TIS • G1000 can reboot in flight • Avidyne implementations can have electronic charts (G1000 future), better integrated fuel management, and engine leaning functions • G1000 is 1024x768, Avidyne is 800x600 • G1000 MFD can show PFD info in failure mode

Learning vs. Understanding Importance of understanding: • Better able to solve novel problems • Better memory for procedures • Learn procedures faster Limits on understanding: Impossible to understand everything about a complex automation system. Why did it do that? What’s it doing now? What’s it going to do next?

  28. Resource Management, Workload Tendency for pilots to use automation just because they have it. Choosing the right level of automation based on circumstances “Turn it off” training Automation can decrease and increase workload.

  29. Losing skills “Use it or lose it” Hand-flying skills atrophy when automation is overused. Automation skills atrophy when automation is underused. Look out the window !!
