    1. DISTRACTIONS IN THE COCKPIT MAINTAINING YOUR FOCUS IN AN ANNOYING WORLD

    2. WHAT TO TAKE HOME FROM THIS SEMINAR… AN APROACH TO SMOOTH OUT SOME OF THE ROUGH EDGES IN OUR FLYING A FEW IDEAS TO RAMP UP THE PROFESSIONALISM WITH WHICH WE CONDUCT OURSELVES AS THE CAPTAINS OF OUR AIRPLANES A RETURN TO THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL NECESSITIES OF OUR JOBS AS PILOTS, DESPITE DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS IN COCKPIT TECHNOLOGY & INCREASED RESPONSIBILITY

    3. DURING PREFLIGHT YOUR “COPILOT” IS PROBABLY NOT “HELPING” THIS IS NOT A FORMALITY, YOU ARE ABOUT TO GET INTO THIS THING & FLY!!! DON’T FORGET THE WEATHER, OR AT LEAST NOTAMS & TFR’S FOR A SHORT LOCAL FLIGHT

    4. DURING TAXI DISTRACTIONS ARE THE #1 CAUSE OF RUNWAY INCURSIONS, EVEN @ AN UNFAMILIAR AIRPORT CHECKLISTS PASSENGERS CLEARANCES/ FLIGHT FOLLOWING AVIONICS PROGRAMMING

    5. COCKPIT ORGANIZATION SET UP YOUR OFFICE KNEEBOARD CHECKLIST CHARTS PEN OR PENCIL NOTE PAPER TAXI DIAGRAMS FLASHLIGHT POH WITHIN REACH

    6. PASSENGERS INTERCOMM ISOLATE? LET THEM KNOW WHEN TO TALK, & WHEN NOT TO TALK WHAT A RELATIONSHIP! POOR MAN’S TCAS… NOT “EVERYTHING”CAS

    8. PROGRAMMING THE GPS PRE-TAXI LOAD BEFORE YOU CALL CHANGES ENROUTE WHERE’S THAT CHART AGAIN? TURN ON THE AUTOPILOT, OR LET IT TAKE A FEW MINUTES, RELAX LOADING THE APPROACH “LOAD” & BRIEF THE APPROACH DURING THE CRUISE SEGMENT KNOW YOUR GPS “BUTTONOLOGY” BEFORE YOU FLY, OR PAY THE PRICE…

    9. THE RADIO…MY GOODNESS THE RADIO! #1 DISTRACTION IN FLYING THE PTT IS ACTUALLY A BLINDFOLD ACTUATOR TREAT IT LIKE THE TRIGGER OF A LOADED GUN KEEP TRANSMISSIONS SIMPLE, CLEAR, & SLOW

    12. XM RADIO OR AM RADIO ON THE ADF FOR US CHEAP SKATES… YOUR PASSENGERS WILL LOVE IT! YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL

    13. NON-STERILE COCKPIT PROFESSIONAL COCKPITS PRECLUDE NON-ESSENTIAL COMMUNICATION BELOW 10,000’, & OTHER THAN CRUISE FLIGHT FOR US, CONSIDER EXERCISING A STERILE COCKPIT UNTIL YOU COMPLETE YOUR CRUISE CHECKLIST, AND RESUMING ONCE IT’S TIME TO PICK UP YOUR DESTINATION ATIS

    14. AUTOPILOT BUT, I THOUGHT THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO SOLVE THIS ENTIRE PROBLEM?!?!?! MISMANAGED AUTOPILOT OR FLIGHT DIRECTOR IS MORE WORK THAN HAND-FLYING LESS THAN 10% OF US EFFICIENTLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR AUTOPILOTS & FLIGHT DIRECTORS IN HIGH WORKLOAD SITUATIONS

    15. ATTENTION TO EQUIPMENT … NOT COMPUTER EQUIPMENT THERE’S A FINE FOR THAT NOW FANCY GLASS GIZMOS GPS PROGRAMMING MFD

    16. INOPERATIVE EQUIPMENT & ABNORMAL OPERATIONS DOOR OPENS IN FLIGHT (EVER FLY A BONANZA?) RUNNING AN ABNORMAL CHECKLIST EVALUATING AN IMPROPERLY OPERATING SYSTEM L1011 EVERGLADES CRASH DUE TO A SIMPLE LANDING GEAR MALFUNCTION

    17. COMPLACENCY QUITE POSSIBLY OUR WORST DISTRACTION IS NOT HAVING ANY DISTRACTIONS COMPLACENCY BREEDS ERRORS ERROR CHAINS CAUSE ACCIDENTS WE ALL COMMIT SEVERAL ERRORS EACH FLIGHT COMPLACENCY IS THE MISSING LINK THAT TIES THE ERROR CHAIN TOGETHER

    18. FLIGHT TRAINING WHO COULD POSSIBLY BE MORE ANNOYING THAN YOUR FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR? YOUR #1 RESPONSIBILITY AS A VFR PILOT: SEE & AVOID 10 MID-AIR COLLISIONS IN 2007 2 WERE HIGH RISK WARBIRD OPERATIONS 6 WERE VFR WITH CFI’S ON BOARD

    19. WHY DOES ALL OF THIS MATTER? ACCORDING TO NASA RESEARCH, ASSUMING AN ADEQUATE LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE IN A PARTICULAR AIRCRAFT AND ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATION; PILOT AWARENESS, ALERTNESS, AND FOCUS ARE THE PRIMARY DETERMINING FACTORS IN THE SAFETY OF ANY GIVEN FLIGHT THINK ABOUT ALL OF THE BONE-HEADED MISTAKES YOU’VE MADE AS A PILOT…MOST OF THEM PROBABLY WEREN’T DUE TO A LACK OF EXPERIENCE OR SKILL, WERE THEY?

    20. ATTENTIVE PILOT WORKLOAD ANALYSIS

    21. DISTRACTED PILOT WORKLOAD ANALYSIS

    22. HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM GET IN “THE ZONE” BEGINNING WITH THE PREFLIGHT GENEROUSLY EQUIP YOURSELF WITH ALL PERTINENT RESOURCES PROFESSIONALLY BRIEF YOUR PASSENGERS KNOW YOUR GPS & OTHER EQUIPMENT COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WHEN TIME ALLOWS MANAGE A DISCIPLINED, STERILE COCKPIT QUIT JUST TURNING THE AUTOPILOT ON…GET SOME SERIOUS, SCENARIO-GEARED TRAINING NEVER SACRIFICE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU’RE DEALING WITH BE VIGILANT, IF YOU’RE BORED GRAB THE POH & LEARN A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR AIRPLANE COMPLACENCY CAN HURT. YOU’RE THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN GUARANTEE PILOT DISCIPLINE
