The 8 sentence Expository Paragraph Model #1 TS: Topic Sentence – topic/subject and opinion/commentary CHUNK ONE #2 CD: Concrete Detail – An example - Facts, Quotes, or a Paraphrase For example… #3 CM: Commentary – Comment on/explain what the example or detail (fact, quote, or paraphrase) means or implies. This shows (or this demonstrates) … #4 CM: Commentary – Explain how the quotation applies to your opinion: link it back to your TS. CHUNK TWO #5 CD: Provide another fact, quote /paraphrase to support the topic sentence. For example… #6 CM: Commentary – Explain your CD, showing what it means or implies. This shows (or this demonstrates) … #7 CM: Commentary – Explain how the quotation applies to your opinion: link it back to your TS. #8 CS: Concluding Sentence – return to your initial topic, showing the reader how you have proven your point; rephrase your TS, bearing in mind the ‘chunks’ which have proved your point.

CHUNK ONE #2 CD:When she first meets Philip Rhayader at the lighthouse, she is "desperately frightened of the ugly man she had come to see,"on the day she brings the injured snow goose to him. #3 CM: She is looking for his help for the injured bird but she is repulsed by the sight before her. #4 CM:Fritha is not unlike the people of Chelmbury who have rejected Philip because they too can not see beyond his physical deformities.   CHUNK TWO #5 CD:As he teaches her to care for the birds, Fritha learns much from him, and eventually "saw that he was no longer ugly or mis-shapen or grotesque, but very beautiful." #6 CM: She has learned, finally, to see beyond his appearance and into his heart. #7 CM:It is only when she discovers she might lose him that she realizes she at last understands a deeper love. #8 CS: This story is a helpful reminder that people are often more complex and loving than what we might see at first glance.
