Text • Harris, 8th Edition • You will receive Power point handouts • They are the basics of lectures – you should supplement them with notes. • Chapter 0 – very good overview • Chapter 1 – Units, concentration calculations and dilutions – should be revision
Labs • Need to write prelabs • Need to write web-quizzes • Need hard covered notebooks, pens and markers for glassware – and safety glasses • Lab package available including notebooks $35 (includes $10 for handouts) • Buy on Friday after class.
First Lab • 10th, 11th September • Meet in lab 3037 at 2.15 pm for safety talk and introduction to the first wet lab. • Bring lab manual. • We will then go to the computer lab • Bring calculator able to do statistic calcs • We can help if you have lost instructions • Dry lab – will do sample calcs and graphing. • There is a practice example and answers on the web page at BOTTOM of list of labs Excel – pp 43-47 of Harris and in Lab Manual
Second lab • In the 361 lab • Partners • You are expected to think
Tutorial? • Mostly to help write up labs • Come see me individually – or suggest a tutorial time. • Class ombudsman?
Assignments • Library assignment • With labs: Simplex, IR, Fluorescence,Radiochemistry • Some problems from textbooks • Second assignment on Fluorescence • Please bring calculator to class because every now and then I will ask you to do calculations in class
First Assignment • Finding AOAC methods • Come see me if necessary and I will help you interpret it and go over what are the important parts • Due Friday 21st September. 4.30 pm. • Sign –up sheet for your chosen topic outside my office
