Articles • The words a, an, and the make up a special group of adjectives….articles!
Indefinite Articles • A and an are called indefinite articles because they refer to one of a general group of people, places, things, or ideas. • A is used with a consonant sound • An is used with a vowel sound. • Don’t confuse spellings with sounds.
Indefinite Articles • A unit • A painting • An etching • An hour • A pig • An emu
The Article The • The is called a definite article because it identifies specific people, places, things, or ideas. • The valuable statue is the only one of its kind.
Proper Adjectives • Proper adjectives are formed from proper nouns. • A proper adjective ALWAYS begins with a capital letter. • Examples: • The Italian statue is on display at the Houston museum. • The February exhibit follows a show of French paintings.
Some Proper Adjectives… • Although most proper adjectives are formed from proper nouns by adding one of the previous endings, some are formed differently. • For those, you must check a dictionary.
