  4. What the heck are Cornell notes? • Cornell University realized students were not doing very well on tests... • Walter Pauk (the college’s reading and study center director) created a way students could: • Take more organized notes. • create a study guide with them... at the same time.

  5. NOW Let’s TRY it! • Sherman Alexie • Born October 7, 1966 • Is a Native American poet, writer, and filmmaker. • Much of his writing draws on his experiences as a Native American growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. (pronounced Spoke-Can-Knee)

  6. Do your notes look like this? ORIGINAL TEXT • Born October 7, 1966 • Is a Native American poet, writer, and filmmaker. • Much of his writing draws on his experiences as a Native American growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. (pronounced Spoke-Can-Knee) NOTES • Born 10/7/66 • Poet, writer, filmmaker • Native American • Spokane Reservation • Washington (WT)

  7. Alexie’s Childhood • Born with with hydrocephalus, a condition that occurs when there is a lot of cerebral fluid in the cranial cavity of the brain. • Underwent brain surgery when he was six months old - he was not expected to survive. • However, Alexie's surgery was successful and he survived with no damage to brain. Baby born with Hydrocephalus

  8. Alexie’s struggles at home • His father was an alcoholic who often left the house for days at a time. • To support her six children, Alexie's mother, Lillian, sewed quilts and worked as a clerk at the Wellpinit Trading Post • he was constantly teased by other kids on the reservation. He recalls being nicknamed "The Globe" because he had a large head due to the hydrocephalus.

  9. Alexie’s education • In order to better his education, Alexie made the decision to leave the reservation and attend Reardan High School. • The school was thirty miles off the reservation and Alexie was the only student of Native heritage among mostly white students. • He excelled at school and became a star player on the basketball team. • Along with the basketball team, Alexie was also class president and a member of the debate team.

  10. Alexie Today • Helped to create Longhouse Media, an organization that is committed to teaching filmmaking skills to Native American youth • Alexie’s poetry, short stories and novels all assert the same themes: despair, poverty, violence and alcoholism among the lives of Native American people. • Supports many youth programs and initiatives dedicated to uplifting at-risk Native youth.

  11. PARTNER WORK • Step 1: Share and compare your notes with a partner. Fill in the missing gaps. • Step 2: Write in questions (ON THE LEFT) that correspond with the notes. • Example Questions • - When was Sherman Alexie born? • - What developmental disorder was Alexie born with?
