  1. Welcome to Year 5 Sketty Primary School

  2. Settling into Year 5 • We hope that your child has already settled into the new routines and they are happy with the day to day organisation. • The children are becoming aware of the increasing expectations. • We aim to support and nurture them in developing their own individual skills and talents.

  3. The Curriculum Autumn Term • During the Autumn term the children will be studying both World War 1 and 2, and their impact on the everyday lives of people, especially children. • Visits – Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea University, Sony Pencoed, Swansea Bay 1940s Museum.

  4. Spring Term • This term the children will undertake work linked to the theme of Gallery. We will look at the role of imagery in today’s society. • Visits – Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Katie Allen artist. • Personal Presentations

  5. Summer Term • The children will study topics linked to Bend & Flow. This is a Geography and Science based theme, looking at water, rivers, forces and energy. • Visits – The River Tawe at Craig Y Nos.

  6. Some dates • Inset Day Friday 19th October • Sony Pencoed – Y5EC/SW 15th & 16th October; Y5RE/PR 3rd & 4th December • Parent meetings Monday 22nd & Tuesday 23rd October

  7. Home Learning • Maths when appropriate. We are hoping to be able to purchase SumDog numeracy games online • Reading daily • Weekly Spelling • Topic when appropriate

  8. Home Learning • After Christmas the children take it in turns to create a 5 minute presentation to the class on a subject that interests them. • This may include photos, Power Point, music, artefacts, maps, demonstrations etc.

  9. Other Weekly Events • Your child has a weekly P.E. lesson for which they will require the appropriate kit. It’s on Friday. • ICT Suite - Tuesday afternoon. • A variety of after school clubs. • Swimming in the Spring Term. • Spelling Test on a Friday

  11. During this year… • Please feel free to come to talk to us at the start or end of the day if you have any queries or concerns. • We look forward to working with you to provide the best Year 5 possible for your child.

  12. And finally… • We hope by the end of this academic year, your child will be a step nearer : • Being a more confident, independent learner, • Having a good level of self-esteem, • Being able to use the skills and knowledge they have used this year to help them in the future.
