  1. MuCool Beamline: Status External Beams Dept. C. Johnstone, + others

  2. Beam Extraction from Linac • Extraction to MTA • Begins upstream and continues downstream of 400-MeV chopper to contain H- magnetic stripping losses to 10-4 level. • Extraction magnets: • Identical “H” magnets (MI correctors) • Off-center operation in high-loss area (lambertson) • Minimal clearance past critical 400-MeV quadrupole (  0.5”) • Increased # of downstream dipoles plus off-center operation in congested, high-loss area of diagnostic/400-MeV line • 400-MeV vacuum interruption for installation/removal • ~ no cost advantage (no existing laminations, coils represent the bulk of the cost)

  3. Proposed Extraction Scheme • Two “C” magnets • One 3 magnet upstream and one 7.5 magnet downstream; single power supply for both • Aligned operation, maximal beam-stay clear • Improved clearance/conflicts with 400-MeV line • No vacuum interruption for installation/removal • DESIGN is complete; preliminary assembly drawings by E. Black

  4. Shutdown requests DONE • Fabricate beam pipes and short Linac BPM for Linac to chopper reconfiguration • Fabricate new end pieces for Chopper- eng. to be assigned • After Booster is operational and studies are completed during shutdown, install new Linac to chopper configuration including Q74 move and new BPM • Install new chopper flanges with gate value on downstream end to MTA – not scheduled at this time • Confirm operation of Booster with new Q74 location • Installation can now proceed without vacuum interruption to Linac or Booster cancelled pending

  5. View of quadrupole to be moved ~10’ upstream BLD – will be removed to make space for quad Quad to be moved

  6. Modifications to Chopper and its downstream endE. Black

  7. Beamline Design and Cost Status • Beamline and components are designed and costs known up to the needs of individual experiments • Experimental requirements and various options were under discussion but appear solved for Mucool + Muons Inc experiments. • Final power and water requirements for these two experiments have been resolved and costed since meeting with R. Dixon.

  8. Shielding Assessment Status • Shielding assessment documents complete for MuCool experiment and enclosure • Remaining calculations and documentation: • Linac shielding new assessment to include impact and details of the MuCool beamline – in progress • Duplicate all simulations and documentation for Rol’s experiment and enclosure requirements

  9. Beamline Details: • Extraction “C” magnet design • Beamline magnets
