The Angel Gabriel came to Muhammad and brought God’s message, which was recorded in the book the Qur’an or Koran, which would become the muslim holy book Slowly Muhammad began to increase the number of his followers In 624 Muhammad’s army of 300 defeated the Meccan force of 900 at Badr In 630 Muhammad entered Mecca as a conqueror and renamed the city Medina.

  10. Muslim Religious Sects Sunni Muslims comprise 90% of practicing Muslims in the world and can be seen as an umbrella group. In contrast to Shi’a Muslims, Sunni Muslims believe Muhammad’s succession should follow the religious leaders and not Muhammad’s blood relatives. Aside from succession their fundamental faith is very similar to that of Shi’a Muslims Shi’a Muslims are a smaller sect that followed Muhammad brother-in-law Ali Bakr after 621 BCE. They believe that all other caliphates after Ali are frauds and that they follow the true Islamic word. There are approximately 120 million Shi’a Muslims in the world. Sufi Muslims are a blanket term referring to all mystical Muslims. It incorporates traditional religion into the Islamic faith and helped spread Islam further into Africa and Asia. Sufism is said to be "mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God."
