  6. An Example • Stokes said that movies should show better role models for girls and boys, but he’s not taking parenting into account. Parenting is more important than movies. • Stokes focuses on the effects of movie role models, but he neglects to take children’s temperaments and personalities into account. • Stokes focuses on the positive life lessons in The Wizard of Oz, but no movie can ever capture the complexity of life. POSSIBLE THESIS: In his TED talk, How Movies Teach Manhood, Colin Stokes suggests that movies need to provide better role models for boys because right now, they show boys inappropriate ways to deal with women. Stokes also makes a connection between poor movie role models and crime against women. While Stokes’ ideas about movie role models is accurate, he fails to consider other factors that have a great influence on children: parenting, individual personality, and the complexity of life.
