A Global View • A religion is an organized system of beliefs and practices, often centered on one or more gods. • Religions have guided peoples beliefs and actions for thousands of years • They have brought people together, but also torn them apart • Today, religions are powerful forces affecting how people behave and what they wear.

4. What are the five major religions? • There are thousands of religions in the world today. • The major religions are: • Buddhism • Christianity • Hinduism • Judaism • Islam

Buddhism • Began in India 6th century B.C. • Founded by Siddhartha Gautama known as Buddha • Buddha means enlightened one • His teachings included the way to end suffering was by practicing the Noble Eightfold Path • Right opinions, right desires, right speech, right action, right job, right effort, right concentration, and right meditation

Christianity • Largest religion in the world – 2 billion followers • Based on the life and teachings of Jesus • Jesus, a Jew, taught many ideas from the Jewish tradition • Christians spread faith through the Roman Empire • Believe Jesus is the son of God • Jesus entered the world and died to save humanity

Hinduism • Hinduism is a way of life guided by religious beliefs and practices that developed over thousands of years • Believe that a supreme being is the soul of the universe • The same presence can be found within each person • Religious practices include prayer, meditation, selfless acts, and worship of the various Hindu deities • Major religion of Nepal and India

Islam • Islam is a religion based on teachings of Qur’an, the religions holy book • Followers of Islam are known as Muslims • Believe that God revealed these teachings to prophet Muhammad through angel Gabriel around A.D. 610 • There is only one God- the same God worshipped in Judaism and Christianity • Five pillars of Islam: faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage to Mecca

10. Judaism • Judaism was the first major monotheistic religion based on the concept of one God • Basic teachings come from the Torah • Ten commandments for moral laws and for all of humanity • 14 million Jews throughout the world • Many live in Israel where a Jewish state was created in 1948

Confucianism • Ethical system based on teachings of the Chinese scholar Confucius • Stresses social and civic responsibility • Confucius was born in 551 B.C. • Today, confucianism guides the actions of millions of Chinese people and other eastern people • Greatly influenced people’s spiritual beliefs • There is no clergy or gods to worship
