  3. His Family • He had 11 brothers and sisters

  4. Family Needs • Because he had such a large family he quit school to help make money. Farmers taught him how to plant and take care of apple trees.

  5. Growing Up • When he was 23 years old, he decided to explore other places in America. He took seeds from some of the trees and started walking.

  6. Heading West • As he walked westward he planted many different kinds of apples.

  7. Apple Harvesting • He planted apples in Ohio

  8. Apple Harvesting • Planted apples in Indiana

  9. Apple Harvesting • Planted apples in Illinois

  10. His Journey Johnny traveled hundreds of miles planting trees and giving other people apple seeds.

  11. His Nickname Word began to spread… Some folks said he dressed very strangely, going barefoot and wearing a mush pot on his head, but he was a gentle man and even the animals loved him. So, they started calling him Johnny Appleseed!

  12. Goodbye Johnny • Johnny Appleseed died when he was 81, right before the spring blossoms were about to bloom.

  13. Farmers Market • You can still see the influence of Johnny Appleseed today. Did you know there are over 2500 varieties of apples today?
