  2. VOCABULARY

  3. CAPACITY(noun): The ability of someone or something to hold something • This room has a capacity of 20 people.

  4. SUPPLY (verb): To give or provide something needed • Çankaya University does not supply books to the students.

  5. PERIOD (noun): A space of time between two events or a portion of time • The Renaissence period started around 1400s and ended in 1600s.

  6. CONSUME (verb): To use something up, destroy something or eat something • Reanult produced a car that does not consume oil.

  7. CUMULATIVE (adjective): Somethingthat is increasing or getting bigger with more additions. • The cumulative environmental problems are causing serious health problems.

  8. AVERAGE (adjective): Calculated by adding several amounts together and then dividing the total by the number of amounts • I am driving with an average speed of 100.

  9. RATE (noun): Aquantity measured and compared to another quantity measured (such as a number of miles per hour) • High school graduation rates for girls is higher in the west.

  10. CONSTANT (adjective): Somethingthat doesn't change or something that continues or remains steady. • Earth’s rotation around the Sun has a constant speed.

  11. AVERAGE OUT (verb): To find the average of numbers • If you average out five and seven, you get six. 5 + 7 = 12 12 ÷ 2 = 6

  12. DEMAND (noun): To urgently ask for something or someone ordering someone to do something • Teachers demand students to turn off their phones before class.

  13. FLUCTUATE (verb): Rise and fall irregulary in number or amount • The temperature in Erzurum fluctuates a lot during day and night.

  14. PEAK (adjective): The highest level, maximum • Yesterday, there was a peak temperature with 45 degress. It was so hot.

  15. FLUCTUATION (noun): The irregular ise and fall in number or amount • There was a big fluctuation in temperatures yesterday. It was 20 degress during the day and 0 degrees at night.

  16. PEAK TIMES (adjective+noun): The time when something reaches the highest level • The peak times for electric consumption is between 5 and 10 pm.

  17. OFF-PEAK TIMES (adjective+noun): The time when something reaches the lowest level • The off-peak times for electric comsumption is between 12 pm and 6 am.

  18. MEET DEMAND (verb+noun): To supply the need for something • When there is too much consumption, the electricity companies can not meet the demand and lights go out.

  19. PEAK (verb): to reach the highest level • The need for electricity peaks after 5pm.

  20. RUN TO CAPACITY (verb+noun): to work with full power • The factory is running to its capacity. It is working at full capacity.

  21. SPARE CAPACITY (adjective+noun): The power/ability that is not used • The theatre was almost full. It had a spare capacity of 20 people.

  22. INEFFICIENT (adjective): Not doing a job well and not making the best use of time, money etc. • The heating system in our building is quite inefficient.

  23. INPUT (noun): Somethingentered into a machine, the advice or thoughts that you give to help someone • I like to have student input in my classes, so feel free to say your ideas.

  24. OUTPUT (noun): The act of producing something • BMW plans to increase output to 10 000 cars a year.

  25. LOSS (noun): Havingsomething or someone leave or be taken away from you, or a decline in money • Microsoft had a big loss last year.

  26. EFFICIENT (adjective): Doing something well with no waste of time, money or energy • My car is very efficient. It uses 3.8 litres of oil per 100 kms.

  27. GAIN (verb): To get something or to add on or increase • My sister has gained so much weight after she got married.

  28. SURPLUS (adjective): An amount that is extra or more than you • Last year, there was so much rain, so there was a food surplus.

  29. EXCEED (verb): To be greater than a particular number or amount • The price for the Cappadocia trip will not exceed 200 liras.

  30. NET (adjective): Amount that remains when there is nothing more to be taken away • The company had a net profit of 1 million dollars last year.

  31. Talk about the questions in pairs.

  32. Partner A: Ask the questions.Partner B: Answer the questions. • What is the best period in a human’s life? Childhood, youth or old age? Why? • What can a boss do to increase the workers’ efficiency? • Can you drive? Have you ever exceeded a speed limit? What happens when you exceed a speed limit? What happened to you? • What can you supply when you go to a dinner party? • What are your demands from the school administration?

  33. Partner B: Ask the questions.Partner A: Answer the questions. • What do you like to do in your spare time? • Is it efficient or inefficient to work the night before the test? Why? • Do you like your capacity as a student? Why? • What was the biggest loss of your life? • What do you like to consume for breakfast? • An example of input is when someone asks you about a problem and you give your advice. Whose input do you ask for when you have a problem?
