  1. Topic: Immunity Aim: Explain some disorders of the immune system. Do Now: Copy topic, aim and HW. HW: Venn Diagram – Passive and Active Immunity

  2. PATHOGEN • Identify structures A, B and C. • Describe what occurs when a pathogen enters the body. • Identify what produces structure B. • What kind of immunity would this provide? A ANTIGEN C B ANTIBODY

  3. Compare and contrast passive and active immunity. COMPARE They BOTH help fight pathogens. They BOTH involve antibodies and antigens.

  4. CONTRAST Passive immunity is short-term. Active immunity is long-term.

  5. CONTRAST Active immunity occurs when you make your own antibodies. Passive immunity occurs when you RECEIVE antibodies.

  6. CONTRAST Vaccinesare used to get active immunity. Vaccines CANNOT be used to get passive immunity.

  7. CONTRAST You can get passive immunity from your mother. This is not true for active immunity.

  8. Infectious disease • Caused by a pathogen • Can be transmitted (passed on) • CONTAGIOUS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-3Ju0EX3gQ

  9. How can diseases be spread? • By your respiratory system • Coughing or sneezing • Chickenpox, a cold, influenza, strep throat

  10. During sexual activity (STD’s) • HIV/AIDS: breaks down the immune system

  11. Direct and indirect contact

  12. Noninfectious disease • Not caused by a pathogen • CANNOTbe transmitted

  13. Allergies

  14. Cancer https://youtu.be/LEpTTolebqo?list=PL69F87388814E7A2F

  15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8sw2FI-_bI

  16. Arthritis

  17. Heart disease

  18. Diabetes • Asthma

  19. Identify one example of a noninfectious disease that CAN BE PREVENTED. • Heart disease • Skin cancer • Lung cancer

  20. Identify one example of a noninfectious disease that CANNOT BE PREVENTED. • Breast cancer • Leukemia (bone cancer) • Prostate cancer • Pancreatic cancer

  21. Let’s summarize…: • Identify the type of disease that can be transmitted or spread. • Identify the type of disease that CANNOT be transmitted or spread.

  22. Infectious diseases are caused by • deficiencies in the diet • allergies • microscopic organisms that can be transmitted from one organism to another • malfunctioning organs

  23. Resistance to a specific disease is a(n) 1. antibiotic.   2. immunity.   3. white blood cells.   4. addiction

  24. Once you have had the chicken pox, it is unlikely that you will ever get the disease again because your body has developed a(n) 1. passive immunity.   2. addiction.   3. active immunity.   4. antibiotic.

  25. An injection of a weakened virus that allows one to develop immunity against a disease is called a • antibody • vaccine • epidemic • pathogen

  26. Which of the following parts of the body's defense system seeks out and destroys bacteria? • mucus   • white blood cells   • skin   • red blood cells

  27. Immunity that occurs when a body makes its own antibodies is called _________immunity. • Passive • Temporary • Shortened • Active

  28. Infectious diseases are caused by • deficiencies in the diet • allergies • microscopic organisms that can be transmitted from one organism to another • malfunctioning organs

  29. A person with AIDS is likely to develop infectious diseases because the virus that causes AIDS • destroys cancerous cells • damages the immune system • increases the rate of antibody production • increases the rate of microbe destruction
