  1. BUYING TIPS FOR LARGE AND LOW VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS Transformers come in different types and sizes and what you should buy depends on your equipment’s needs. Before you order a transformer for your personal use, here are some things to keep in mind. Determine where you are going to use it. If you are going to buy a transformer with the aim of using a 220-volt appliance that you purchased from another country in the US, then you will most likely need a step-up transformer. If you will be using the transformer in countries that have a power source of 220 volts, you will need a step-down transformer in order to use American devices and appliances that have an input voltage of 120 volts. There are also step up/down converters and transformers that work both ways. These transformers can be very handy if you travel often as they enable you to use of your electric devices or appliances anywhere you might find yourself in the world. What devices are you going to plug into the converter? Think about what you want to use the transformer for. Make a list and write the power rating of each appliance or device that you want to plug into it. You need this information to buy the right power rating and capacity. The market offers a lot of options; you can get a transformer that has a 1000-watt capacity on the lower end of the scale, all the way to units that have a capacity of 25,000 watts. The right choice depends on the number of appliances that you will use and their power requirements. Here’s a quick guide: A combi fridge has a capacity of 200 watts while a dishwasher has a capacity of 1200 watts. Do you have a coffee machine at home? Its capacity is anywhere from 500 to 1000 watts. An LED TV’s capacity is 20 to 60 watts while gaming consoles are rated at 180 watts. The washing machine, on average, has a capacity of 2500 watts. Always leave a margin. Once you have computed the total power needed by your machines, you should multiply that number at least two (more safely, three) to determine the power capacity of the transformer that you need. This margin of power will accommodate spikes and surges.
