Management 480 – Strategic Planning – in London & Ireland – Summer 2006
This course offers you the opportunity to complete your college career while studying and traveling in England and Ireland. The general design is that of a January term abroad program, but conducted in May and June. Because of the late Summer evenings in England and Ireland (dusk is generally around 11 pm), there will be time for “tourist activities” after classroom sessions and/or field trips have been conducted.
The classes in London will be held on the University of London campus in Bloomsbury (a five minute walk from the British Museum). Classes in Ireland will be held on the National University of Ireland, Cork (NUIC) Campus.
The estimated cost of the course is $4,475 (subject to exchange rate fluctuations, airfares, and final decisions on field trips). This fee includes tuition; airfare; accommodation; “tube” passes for London and field trips in London and Cork. The fee includes a 2-credit course on British Life and Culture taught by a British faculty member. This course will consist of 6 lectures, plus the field trips to Cambridge, Canterbury, etc and will be on a Pass/Fail basis. Taking 6 credits will qualify you for financial aid in the summer.

The English field trips will include trips to 1) Oxford or Cambridge and 2) Canterbury followed by dinner at a 300 year old English country Pub. Field trips in Ireland will be to 1) Blarney Castle (and the Blarney Stone), 2) a 3-day weekend trip to Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, the Cliffs of Moher, Kilarney, Dingle and The Ring of Kerry and 3) a site visit to Waterford Crystal where we will watch the production of crystal. Waterford Crystal is one of a select few crystal manufacturers where the
Phil Anderson lived and taught in Ireland for 4 years. He was also the first Director of the London Business Semester. Phil knows both Ireland and England well, traveling to each country over 40 times in the last 15 years. He has led this program annually since June 1997.
Housing & Meals
Accommodation in London will be in flats (apartments) in the South Kensington area of Central London with four students per flat. Travel time by subway to the campus area is about 20 minutes.
Accommodation in Cork will be in a student-housing complex adjacent to the campus with four students per unit, each with a private bedroom and shared kitchen, living room and bathroom with shower. No meals are included with the accommodations since you will have your own kitchen facilities.
Crystal is both mouth-blown and hand-cut. Tentative plans are to visit the Apple Computer plant in Cork that manufactures Apple desktop computers and supplies Western Europe. While in Ireland, we will also visit Paddy Hayes, former CEO of Ford, Ireland and Waterford/Wedgwood. Paddy has visited UST annually since 1991 and received an honorary PhD from UST in June 1997. An optional 3-day weekend in Paris is also planned for an estimated cost of $395 (includes transportation, lodging and coach tours).
The course will be five weeks long, extending from 22 May to 28 June 2006. Week 1 will be held on the UST Campus. These classes will be intensive presentations of the course materials so that heavy reading will be completed before departing for London. This will prepare you for the field trips and
