  2. Introduction • The Cold Chain Weight & Volume Calculator is a practical tool for calculating the space • required for in-country deliveries and cold chain storage. It is designed to help • Partners / EPI and Supply managers to calculate their cold chain requirements easily • for better supply and in-country logistic planning. • Below, you will find examples and explanations of how to use the calculator. • The calculator will be regularly updated for new products on the UNICEF Internet • website. • Please note that the calculator should be used for guidance only. For example, in some • cases a selected vaccine/supplier combination may not be available. • If you have any questions or if we can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. • Myungsoo Cho (English): email: mcho@unicef.org, Tel: +45 4533 5762 • Gwenn Martiny (English/French): email: gmartiny@unicef.org, Tel: +45 4533 5783

  3. How to use the Calculator • 1- Select a vaccine from the drop-down menu • 2- Select a supplier from the drop-down menu • 3- Input the quantity in vials • When using the tool, select the vaccine, the manufacturer and input the number of vials. Check the purchase order • for the supplier name or contact Supply Division. The calculator will then estimate a range of information such as • storage temperature requirements and inner & shipping cartons weights and volumes. For your information, a certain • vaccine type / supplier selected in the calculator may not be available when placing the order.

  4. Example: Cumulative Table If you plan a delivery of several vaccines: 1- Click on “Add to Table” for the first vaccine 2- Select a new vaccine from the drop-down menu 3- Click on “Add to Table” to add the second vaccine to the summary table and so on for as many vaccines you need. This information is to help calculate required volume for in-land deliveries and storage. Note that the dimensions of inner and shipping cartons are supplier specific.

  5. Example of SSI BCG-20 carton measurements • 60 inner cartons X • 50 vials in each = 3,000 vials • 0.4 m • 5 cm • 50 vials • 8 cm • 0.6 m • 16.7 cm • 0.7 m • Vaccine Inner carton • Vaccine Shipping carton Example: Weight & Volume calculation

  6. +80 C • 4 categories for Storage Temperature in the Calculator • +20 C • Between +20 C and +80 C, can also be frozen • Between +20 C and +80 C, must not be frozen • Should be -200 C or below • Dry Storage (Diluents or Droppers for OPV vaccine) • -200 C Example: Storage Temperature information
