  1. II.ZZ.SS. The 4L-Project:Local information worldwide EAHIL Workshop Alghero - Italy, June 7-9, 2001 L.Pitaro Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno Portici - Na (Italy)

  2. setting the scene II.ZZ.SS. • scientific information wants to be freely available and authors interest is that of enabling the max number of researchers to access the results of their work • http://www.cogsci.soton.ac.uk/-harnad/Tp/resolution.htm • but marketing plays an important role in the distribution of scientific information and commercial activity does not belong to Academic and Research Institutions

  3. the Italian reality II.ZZ.SS. • BIOSIS year 2000: • < than 4% of records by Italian authors • < than 0,02% are from Italian journals • CAB Abstracts • < than 3% of records by Italian authors • < than 1,6% are from Italian journals • COMPENDEX • < than 3% of records by Italian authors • < than 0,02% are from Italian journals • INSPEC • < than 3% of records by Italian authors • < than 0,1% are from Italian journals • PSYCINFO • < than 1,5% of records by Italian authors • < than 0,1% are from Italian journals • SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS • < than 2% of records by Italian authors • < than 1% are from Italian journals

  4. reasons for that II.ZZ.SS. • Institutions: lack of awareness of the importance of promoting and distributing the scientific research to the scientists outside a specific environment • general tendency of these Institutions not to implement mechanisms of recording/tracing what is published by their researchers • language barriers

  5. the II.ZZ.SS. case II.ZZ.SS. • Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale of Lombardia and Emilia Romagna analysis results: • < 25% of internal scientific production in CAB • < 20% of internal scientific production in Medline

  6. II.ZZ.SS.who we are & what we do II.ZZ.SS. • II.ZZ.SS. network: • 10 headquarters • 96 provincial diagnostic branches • connections with Universities and other research centres • publications: • research papers in scientific journals • scientific annual reports • factual cells and monoclones databases • training materials • patrons: • veterinarians, biologists, chemists, laboratory technicians, farmers professionals, students, animal and human nutrition specialists

  7. 4L-Project:how we got there II.ZZ.SS. • in 1999: cooperation among all the Institutes started • aim: to acquire and to share electronic resources • in 2000: cooperation developed to reach better integration and to create a single search environment for users and … original idea evolved as we understood the necessity to open II.ZZ.SS. scientific production for visibility within and outside national borders

  8. 4L-Project stages II.ZZ.SS. • Project stage 1: • Lombardia & Emilia Romagna, Umbria & Marche and Mezzogiorno (Campania & Calabria) II.ZZ.SS. involved • Project next stages: • Involve all of the other II.ZZ.SS. laboratories as soon as the feasibility of project is assessed • Collections of single Institutes to be available transparently to all users – internal and external • Harvesting of II.ZZ.SS. scientific production and creation of a bibliographic database • Integration of database with corresponding full-text and any other external resources • Make the database information visible and available worldwide

  9. 4L-Project requirements II.ZZ.SS. • easy possibility of integration with the other external resources in a context of hybrid Library • access possibility with standard protocols like Z39.50 and OAI • structure or record based on Dublin Core

  10. partnership: our choice II.ZZ.SS. partnership with SilverPlatter Information will allow us to: • create the database and keep the intellectual property of its contents • use their international network and infrastructure to coordinate and promote the initiative giving it visibility at a global level • feed into a central disciplinary database with our database information and make it searchable alongside all other major commercial databases in same field • link central database information to the full-text

  11. 4L-Project:how it will work II.ZZ.SS. • service to be hosted by SilverPlatter Information and accessible via the Internet • II.ZZ.SS. can install a local hosting system at a later stage • in case of local hosting SilverPlatter will harvest data transfering it to central database via Internet • record scheme to be based on Dublin Core • integration with SilverPlatter ERL technology, WebSPIRS, Z39,50 and SilverPlatter Linking Suite (SilverLinker and LinkWizard)

  12. 4L-Project: the database II.ZZ.SS. • bibliographic records in database linked to fulltext through URL and DOI • feeding of data through a Web interface or via batch record procedures in XML • export of documents will be provided through batch record procedures in XML or OAI protocol data gathering • compatible with ISO Latin1 first and then with Unicode • authentication of users based on LDAP with possibility for PKI in future

  13. with Seneca wordsin mind ... II.ZZ.SS. It isn't because things are difficult that we don't try but by not trying things become difficult (Seneca)
