  2. Spanish-American War (1898) • USS Maine explodes off the coast of Cuba, killing 269 • Explosion is blamed on the Spanish, when in fact it was actually caused by a malfunction • America declares war on the Spanish • War lasted 15 weeks – America won

Treaty of Paris (1898) • Spain freed Cuba • Turned over the islands of Guam (Pacific) and Puerto Rico (Atlantic) to America • Spain also sold the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million • Still all territories of the U.S. today • Is this right? Is this imperialism? • Touched off a huge debate in 1898 – should America rule in these places?

  5. Crises in Latin America • Monroe Doctrine – No European powers can intervene in Latin American affairs • Intervention in: • Nicaragua in 1911 • Mexico in 1914 • America is forced to focus on Europe with World War I looming

World War I • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand • Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia • Germany, obligated by treaty to Austria, declares war on Russia, who is obligated by treaty to Serbia • Germany invades Belgium – Britain, obligated by treaty, declares war on Germany • The Great War begins!

  7. America Joins the War (April 1917) • Sinking of the Lusitania (1915) • Russian Monarchy pushed out of office (1917) • Supports could now claim this was a “war for democracy” • Zimmerman telegram (1917) • About two million U.S. troops fought in WWI • American manufacturing turns the tide

  8. Brutal Warfare • 22 million deaths by time of truce • New Hazards to warfare • Machine gun • Deadly gasses • Trench warfare • 11/11/1918 – Peace

Success? • Versailles Treaty (1919) • Forced Germany into admitting it started the war (did it?) • Huge reparations • Helped create the necessary undercurrents in Germany society to facilitate rise of Nazism in late 1920’s • Those who fought in the war – “The Lost Generation” • All Quiet on the Western Front • League of Nations • Woodrow Wilson pushed for the creation • America refused to join – why?
