ACTIVITY • Rank each common fear below on a scale of 1-10 1 = no fear at all, 10 = extreme fear • Spiders (arachnophobia) • Flying (aerophobia) • Darkness (achluphobia) • Small or tight spaces (claustrophobia) • Germs (mysophobia) • Public speaking (glossophobia) • Thunder/lightnight (astraphobia) • Snakes (ophidiophobia) • Death ( thanatophobia) • Heights (acrophobia)

  3. FACTS ABOUT COMMUNICATION ANXIETY • Public speaking remains the #1 phobia • What this means? Even speakers have this fear. • Social phobias, regardless of which one, begin in childhood. • What this means? Speech anxiety will only get worse until you break it down and learn the skills. • While the fear of public speaking is common, it will lead to a lack of success if you do nothing about it. • What this means? Get past it. Don’t let it hold you back from a degree, a career, relationships, sharing thoughts and ideas, etc.

  4. CONT…. • 3 out of 4 people suffer from speech anxiety. That’s 75% of all people. That includes extroverts (or social people). 15-20% have high anxiety. • What this means? It’s common, so don’t feel like you’re alone! • Women and men are effected equally with public speaking anxiety. • What this means? Most demographic features don’t matter. Anyone can be effected and anyone can overcome speech anxiety!
