Arts in the Schools • Research shows that students who participate in the arts score higher on standardize tests. • “A Columbia University study revealed that students in the arts are found to be more cooperative with teachers and peers, more self-confident and better able to express their ideas.”

These fundamental skills encompass a wide range of more subtle, general capacities of the mind, self-perceptions and social relationships.”

  10. Observations of Exemplary Programs • Reeth-Puffer • Extremely similar to Portage Public Schools! • When students sign up for a music class, they are required to complete an entire year • Both middle schools are on a six period day • Number three marching band in the country!

  11. Our Vision • In order to be an exemplary fine arts academy, we would need to incorporate the following programs: • Music • Choir 6-12th grade (Full time position) • More Space for Band

  15. Our Vision • The fine arts committee would carefully plan a school years worth of fine arts opportunities/activities including symphonies, concerts, plays, musicals, and museum visits. This would allow exposure to fine arts on various levels. • In addition, we would look for various opportunities to bring visiting artists/musicians/poets etc. to our district.

  18. What We Might Look Like in Five Years – A Fine Arts Academy • In five years our K-5 Music Program would have: • Keyboards/computer center with recording possibilities • Elementary Chorus and Concerts • Private lessons in singing, piano and after school enrichment
