  1. GALLBLADDER STONE ANATOMY Dr. Hemendra Sharma

  2. Gall bladder stones are solid materials that are formed from bile cholesterol and bilirubin in the gallbladders. • Bile : the gall bladder transports bile and digestive enzymes. This bile contains cholesterol & bilirubin and several different substances. Bile assists in the digestive process. • Types of gallstones: Cholesterol stones: when the bile consists of excess cholesterol, these stones develop. They are yellowish-green and very common. Pigment stones: they are made up of bilirubin, a fluid made by the liver. They are smaller and darker. INTRODUCTION

  3. Excess amount of cholesterol or bilirubin in bile. • High level of bilirubin in people with liver disease 7 blood disease cause pigment stone. • Infrequent emptying of gallbladder causing over concentration of bile. • Increased in the level of hormone oestrogen. • Obesity CAUSES

  4. Only when complications develop, symptoms start to occur. Other ‘silent gallstones’ require no treatment. • Pain after fatty and greasy meal • Pain in the shoulders and back. • Nausea and vomiting • Indigestion & bloating • Fever and yellowing of the skin. • Severe & constant pain in the right upper part of the abdomen. These stones often don’t cause problem. However if they are large, they may cause pain when there is excess of fatty meal. If they are large in number they may also block the movement of the bile from the gall bladder. SYMPTOMS

  5. ULTRASOUND Painless sound waves are used to create images of the organs. They help in finding an abnormalities in the biliary function, like stones or infection. CT SCAN These are specialized X-rays to see inside of the body organ in a more detailed manner. MRCP Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography uses magnetic field and radio waves energy that make pictures of the inside of the body. HIDA SCAN To check whether the bladder is squeezing properly or not. A harmless radioactive material is injected inside to check the movement. DIAGNOSIS & INVESTIGATION

  6. This is the most common procedure. • A small cut is made in the abdomen through which a tube like instrument which has a tiny camera attached to it is inserted. • It is a less painless procedure to remove the gallstones. • This procedure has faster recovery time and takes about 20 -45 mins.
