  3. 1- Recognizing Geographical Indications Intellectual Property Law • Voted Dec., 2007, promulgated April, 2008 • Refers to all IPR • Towards WTO membership • General application Decree under preparation Awareness activities

  4. 2- Promoting GI s • 2 pilot well-known products chosen out of 5 feasibility studies: • Bolovens plateau coffee • Small chicken rice from Xieng Khouang and Houaphan Prov. • Participative regional workshops • Product testing: coffee cup-testing; rice aroma analysis • Market studies : Boloven coffee; chicken rice XK • Traders, Consumers, Tourists ..

  6. 3- Setting up GI rules • AREA DELIMITATION Identification and data collection Joining data: Geographical Information System (GIS) GI Area Delimitation reports • CODE OF PRACTICES Identification of good practices Proposals for code of practice Discussion: Agreement of all is important, even if it takes time.

  7. Bottlenecks and needs • GI Registration is not yet possible (decree not issued - registration procedures not yet operational) • Added value is obtained through organic and fair trade certifications. Quality linked to origin builds a reputation: It is important for the longer term (market stability) • Locally: Need to follow-up the pilot products, up to registration. • Nationally: need to strengthen national expertise and a joint legal-technical “task force”.
