WHAT IS ACCENT? ACCENT IS RELATED TO A LANGUAGE. HAVING AN ACCENT OR NOT DOES NOT HARM THE WAY A LANGUAGE IS USED. ACCENT IS MOSTLY RELATED TO POETRY. IN THE COMPOSITION OF POETRY, BY ACCENT, YOU MEAN THE STRESS OR EMPHASIS THAT HAS TO BE PLACED ON A LETTER IN A PARTICULAR WORD. THEN, ACCENT IS IMPORTANT IN COMPOSING MUSIC AND POETRY. ACCENT IS ALL ABOUT INTONATION. IF ACCENT GOES WRONG, THEN INTONATION ALSO GOES WRONG. HENCE, WHAT YOU SPEAK IS NOT USUALLY WELL RECEIVED. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE A STRONG BRITISH ACCENT THEN AN AMERICAN SPEAKER MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU SAY IMMEDIATELY. HOWEVER, THAT DOES NOT SAY YOU ARE PRONOUNCING WRONG. WITH TIME, THE AMERICAN LISTENER WILL UNDERSTAND AS THE WORD IS PRONOUNCED CORRECTLY. ACCENT SOMETIMES REFERS TO THE TONE OF VOICE.
TYPES OF ENGLISH ACCENTS 1. THE BRITISH ENGLISH ACCENT 2.STANDARD AMERICAN & CANADIAN ENGLISH ACCENT 3.THE AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND ENGLISH ACCENT 4.THE SOUTH ASIAN ENGLISH ACCENT
1. THE BRITISH ENGLISH ACCENT IN BRITAIN OR WE CAN SPECIFICALLY MENTION LONDON AND SOUTHEAST ENGLAND MAKES USE OF RP WHICH IS REFERRED TO AS RECEIVED PRONUNCIATION. THIS IS TO SHOW HOW WAS THE TRADITIONAL WAY OF SPEAKING ENGLISH BY THE PEOPLE OF ENGLAND. YOU WOULD FIND THAT THIS BRITISH ACCENT IS NOT SPECIFIC TO THE GEOGRAPHICAL CORRELATION AND IT IS NOT EVEN POSSIBLE TO HEAR SOMEONE SPEAK RP. YOU SHOULD KNOW WHICH PART OF THE UK IS MORE INFLUENCED. THIS RP IS TRADITIONALLY CONSIDERED PRESTIGIOUS SOMETHING THAT IS SUPERIOR TO OTHERS. ALTHOUGH, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT YOU ARE ACQUIRING A UNIQUE WAY TO UNDERSTAND.
2.STANDARD AMERICAN & CANADIAN ENGLISH ACCENT THERE ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF AMERICAN ACCENT SPOKEN IN THE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES AND MARKED WITH ATLANTIC LITTORAL WHERE YOU WOULD FIND MEDIEVAL TIME SETTLEMENTS. THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT DIALECTS – NORTHERN, MIDLAND, SOUTHERN. THESE LINGUISTIC BOUNDARIES ARE HIGHLY TENTATIVE. SOMETIMES YOU COULD FIND THAT THEY ARE EXTENDING THE PRESERVED TRADITIONS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH. BUT WITH THE IMMIGRATING GROUP THERE HAVE BEEN NEW DIALECTS OR ACCENTS INTRODUCED IN AMERICA. JUST LIKE SPANISH HAS BECOME REALLY POPULAR IN SOUTHEASTERN AND SOUTHWESTERN STATES.
3. THE AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND ENGLISH ACCENT YOU COULD SEE THAT SOME OTHER COUNTRIES AUSTRALIA, DO NOT SHOW ANY SORT OF CONCENTRATION OF THE EUROPEAN LANGUAGE AND SOMETIMES OTHER THAN ENGLISH AND WITHIN THE BORDERS OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS. THERE ARE MANY ABORIGINAL LANGUAGES WHICH ARE USED BY OR SPOKEN BY A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF PEOPLE. BUT WITH THE CHANGING TIMES, THESE ACCENTS WILL JUST DIE DOWN. AS WE CAN SEE THAT PEOPLE HERE MOSTLY HAVE BRITISH DECEDENT AND ALSO THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT GROWTH IN THE IMMIGRANTS COMING FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. IT WOULD BE BECOMING A COUNTRY DOMINANT WITH THE EUROPEAN ACCENT. SO WITHIN THE TIME SPAN, WE WOULD SEE THE CHANGE IN THE ENGLISH ACCENTS IN AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH.
4. THE SOUTH ASIAN ENGLISH ACCENT In the south Asian region, the country that comes to our mind is India. Basically Hindi was declared the official language but English also had the same importance and to date. English was accepted as the alternative official language. You would find a vast difference between the accents of Hindi speaking people and non-Hindi speaking people. Also, there is a significant difference between the English accent of the Asian public compared to that of people from America and Britain.
WHAT IS PRONUNCIATION? ON THE OTHER HAND, PRONUNCIATION IS MORE ABOUT SPEAKING A LANGUAGE AND ARTICULATION. LANGUAGE IS DEFINED AS A MODE OF EXPRESSION OF THOUGHT BY MEANS OF ARTICULATE SOUNDS. THE ARTICULATE SOUNDS REFERRED TO IN THE DEFINITION REFER TO PRONUNCIATION. ONLY IF, THE PRONUNCIATION OF A PARTICULAR WORD IS RIGHTLY MADE, THE LISTENER CAN UNDERSTAND THE SENSE OF IT. OTHERWISE, HE MAY NOT BE IN A POSITION TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU SPEAK. PRONUNCIATION IS IMPORTANT IN SPEAKING. PRONUNCIATION IS ALL ABOUT ARTICULATION. ON THE OTHER HAND, IF ARTICULATION GOES WRONG, THEN THE ENTIRE PRONUNCIATION GOES WRONG, AND THE PERSON WHO IS SPOKEN CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY. ON THE OTHER HAND, PRONUNCIATION REFERS TO THE ELOCUTION ASPECT OF SPEECH. THIS IS THE REASON WHY PRONUNCIATION IS GIVEN GREAT IMPORTANCE DURING ELOCUTION COMPETITIONS IN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.
What is the difference between Accent and Pronunciation? • When it comes to a language an accent is ‘a distinctive way of pronouncing a language, especially one associated with a particular country, area, or social class. • Accent also refers to the stress or emphasis that has to be placed on a letter in a particular word. • On the other hand, pronunciation is the manner in which a word should be articulated for the better understanding of it. • Accent is all about intonation, whereas pronunciation is all about articulation. • Having a different accent does not mean that you are speaking a language wrongly. However, if you are not pronouncing as the word should be pronounced wrongly then you are speaking a language wrongly. These are the important differences between the two words that are often confused, namely, accent and pronunciation.
Impact of Accent on Pronunciation While pronunciation is typically considered to be the way in which an individual word is spoken, accent is a broader term that refers to the overall pattern of speech used by a particular group of people. This might be defined by region, social class, or ethnicity. Someone who speaks with a regional accent might have different pronunciation patterns or use different words than someone from another part of the country. Similarly, someone from a working-class background might have a different accent than someone from a wealthy family.
While accents can be useful in identifying where someone is from, they can also lead to discrimination. People with certain accents may be seen as less intelligent or capable, and they may have difficulty getting jobs or being taken seriously in academic settings. Despite these challenges, many people are proud of their accents and see them as an essential part of their identity.
The difference in the English speaking accent is very remarkable. The common thing is, all the accents are influenced by traditional or regional languages. But it is one of the most important languages today that holds a lot of significance.
Now when we know that English has been adopted in so many places it becomes very obvious that there would be some kind of difference in pronunciation and in the accent. This is found even in our local or regional languages. The different area has a different accent for the same language. Sometimes the words are having a different pronunciation. It is important to remember that both accent and pronunciation are important aspects of communication. While someone’s pronunciation might be perfect, their accent might still give them away as a foreigner. Similarly, even if someone has a strong accent, they might still be able to communicate effectively if their pronunciation is clear. Ultimately, the most important thing is to be aware of both accent and pronunciation so that you can better understand the people you are speaking to.
CONCLUSION to sum up, pronunciation is about saying individual words correctly, while accent is about speaking in a way that sounds natural to native speakers. The difference in the English speaking accent is very remarkable. The common thing is, all the accents are influenced by traditional or regional languages. But it is one of the most important languages today that holds a lot of significance.
