The Color Wheel • In order to better understand color, we can arrange color into the color wheel.
Did you know? • Color is the way that we describe an object based on the way that it reflects or emits light.
Did you know? • The human eye can see different colors because a part of your eye (the retina) is sensitive to different wavelengths of light.
Did you know? • Humans are called "trichromats," meaning our retinas have 3 different kinds of cells that can receive color. Those cells are called cones.
Fun Fact! • Color has 3 properties: • HUE • VALUE • INTENSITY • Another name for ‘color.’ • The lightness or darkness of a color. • The brightness or dullness of a color.
Color Families • We can break colors into color families. • Color families are groupings of color that have a relationship to one another.
Color Family Groupings • Secondary • Colors • Analogous • Colors • Tertiary Colors • Primary Colors Complimentary Colors • Warm Colors • Cool Colors
Primary Colors • Red, yellow & blue...the primary crew! • Primary means they come first. • These colors are important because they can make the other colors.
Secondary Colors • Orange, purple & green...the secondary team! • Secondary means they come second. • Each of these colors are made by mixing two primary colors.
Tertiary Colors • Red-Orange • Tertiary means they come third. • Each of these colors are made by mixing a primary with a secondary. • There are 6 tertiary colors. • Yellow-Orange • Yellow-Green • Blue-Green • Blue-Violet • Red-Violet
Complimentary Colors • Complimentary colors are opposites on the color wheel. • These colors don’t share any qualities with the opposite color.
Analogous Colors • Analogous colors are colors next to each other on the color wheel. • These colors have similarities to each to each other and they share properties. • They are a collection of a primary, secondary & tertiary color.
Warm Colors • Red, orange & yellow are included in the warm crew. • Warm colors make you think of warm things...the desert, fire & the sun. • Warm colors are lively & full of life!
Cool Colors • Green, blue & purple are the cool colors. • Cool colors remind us of cool things...cool water, the sky & ice. • Cool colors are calm and soothing.
