  1. Good Dental Hygiene May Help Prevent Tooth Loss And Other Problems We all know that prevention is better than cure, and this certainly applies, too, to dental and oral hygiene. With a good oral regimen in place, proper brushing and regular tooth flossing, regular visits to the dentist, you ensure that you take the necessary steps to look after your teeth and general dental health. Good dental practices employ dentists, they offer their patients the services of specialists such as orthodontists and similar dental practitioners, dental assistants and also dental hygienists. A visit to the hygienist scheduled at regular intervals is important. She/he is normally a professional with specific skills to ensure the patient/client leaves with their teeth and gums perfectly clean and clear of any harmful food and dirt particles that they may have arrived with at the appointment. Performing key responsibilities, the oral or dental hygienist helps make sure that patients’ teeth remain healthy and that their gums will not deteriorate. Before the hygienist - or the dentist - performs any of her/his duties, it is important they conduct a proper medical history of the patient. This helps them understand the patient’s dental health, and it gives them an insight into what previous dental work may have been done on the patient, it helps them to understand the patient’s allergies and whatever risks they may be exposed to, as well as to ensure no emergencies occur during their procedure, for example. In addition to their primary task of cleaning and polishing teeth, the hygienist may form and idea of tooth decay and other oral problems so as to alert the dentist before he/she sees a patient, for example. This screening is an important part of what the hygienist does to ensure the dentist knows about the patient’s oral health upfront – for his/her attention. Most people are familiar with hygienists’ dental cleaning. It is done on patients from a young age and should never be neglected, as it helps serve as a great preventative measure: the hygienist discusses the cleaning of teeth with the patient and makes sure they understand the importance of what she/he is doing, and how a proper dental regimen every day can be of great benefit for the patient.

  2. The hygienist uses a number of tools to make sure tartar, plaque and stains are removed from the patient’s teeth. All of these can cause problems if not addressed properly by the hygienist, who may be your first defense against cavities forming ,decay setting in and helping you have a bright smile and healthy teeth. The hygienist uses special pastes and equipment to make sure all plaque and tartar are removed; it is also referred to as scaling and polishing, which are familiar terms for those that have seen a dental hygienist in the past. The hygienist’s task is to also give patients tips about how they can keep the teeth and gums healthy and clean, and they tell you about the best brushing techniques and how to floss between your teeth, and how to avoid bad breath, for example. The hygienist has an important informative function to fulfill by educating patients and emphasising regular brushing and flossing of the teeth, and to make patients aware that any swelling of gums may be the first sign of serious problems, with bleeding gums needing attention immediately. The dental hygienist plays an important part in the prevention of tooth decay and other serious dental problems. Some hygienists are trained to take dental x-rays that help to offer preventative care, and to inform the dentist of any potential problems that may develop if not addressed early on. The hygienist at the dental clinic forms and important link between the patient and dentist, and as a good way to prevent tooth decay, everyone should see the hygienist from time to time.
