  2. What is Dental Hygiene? It’s the act of keeping your teeth clean!

  3. Your Teeth • Children have 20 teeth • Adults have 32 teeth

  4. Tooth Tour • Crown • Enamel • Dentin • Pulp • Root • Cementun

  5. Tooth Types • Canine- Your pointy teeth • Molars- Teeth WAY in the back • Premolars- Next to Canine • Incisors- Your front teeth Now open wide!

  6. How Do I Clean All These Teeth? • With Toothpaste • And Floss

  7. Before Toothpaste….. People had to clean with- • Ground-up chalk or charcoal • Lemon juice • Ashes • Tobacco and honey mixed together YUCK!

  8. What’s In Toothpaste? Fluoride • Makes your teeth strong • Protects them from cavities

  9. How Does Fluoride Work? • Fluoride in water = less cavities? • Mixes with enamel • Mixes with saliva • Creates Strong and healthy teeth

  10. What will happen if I don’t keep my teeth clean? • Cavities • Plaque • Bad Breath

  11. Tooth decays, or breaks down • Hole that can grow bigger and deeper • Cavities are also called dental caries

  12. Cavity Prevention • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste • Brush up and down in a circular motion. • Gently brush your gums • Floss your teeth once a day • Limit sweets and sugary drinks, like soda

  13. What is plaque? • Thin, sticky layer • Bacteria that grows on your teeth

  14. Causes of Bad Breath • foods and drinks, such as garlic, onions, cheese • poor dental hygiene • smoking and other tobacco use • Also possible diseases

  15. Going to the Dentist! A Dentists job is to- • Look at your teeth and gums • Check Teeth are developing as you grow • Keep your smile sparkling

  16. What happens at the Dentist? • You'll meet a dental hygienist • Dental hygienist will look inside your mouth • A bright, overhead light will shine down • The dental hygienist will clean and polish your teeth!

  17. What happens next? • You’ll meet the dentist • Might have x-rays • X-rays don’t hurt • The dentist will study the x-ray Uh oh! Cavity!

  18. Your Bite • The dentist will check on your bite • Four Main Types- • Overbite • Underbite • Crossbite • Openbite

  19. What if my teeth are crooked? • Time for braces! • Only when you have your adult teeth • You’ll now go to an Orthodontist You don’t have to worry about braces until you’re older

  20. What happens when you lose a tooth? • The tooth fairy comes! • Visit the tooth fairy at her website http://www.therealtoothfairies.com/ What does the tooth fairy do with all those teeth?
