Kingdoms and Trading States of Africa • Bantu Migrations • Early Civilizations of Africa • The Kingdom of Nubia • Along the Nile, south of Egypt; also called Kush • Nubian rulers adopted many Egyptian traditions. • Rulers moved capital to Meroë, a trade center. • North Africa • Ruled for a time by Greeks and then Romans • Christianity, and later Islam, spread to North Africa. • Linked into a global trade network • Kingdoms of West Africa • Camel caravans created trade across the Sahara. • West Africans traded gold in exchange for salt. • The Kingdom of Ghana • By A.D. 800, Soninke people united to form Ghana. • King controlled gold-salt trade routes.
