  4. Activity 1: Teaching Warm-upSuggestions • Think for a phrase of the day/week. Will this be a busman’s holiday? • Make students brainstorm what ‘busman’s holiday’ means. • Do any activities to activate the schemata.

  6. Lesson 1: Wrap-up • Set up fun warm up activities as they raise energy levels. • Follow the scheme • a) Purpose – Activating the schemata • b) TTT – Teacher Talking Time • c) STT – Student Talking Time • d) Advantages vs. Disadvantages • E) Adopt for your students

Activity: Teaching Reading • Start with realia: in this case ‘Shopping list’ • Discussion – feedback : continue the shopping list, check in the group, speak about most memorable birthday. • Skin reading - gist question: in this case ‘Is the man happy?’ ( no talking, no writing, no dictionaries) Text for students • Second reading – scan for the facts. Group students in 3 and ask what they remember. Text for teachers • Scan for unknown words / students underline the words, check how many they are/ • Identify the parts of speech • Replace – make a story • Compare with the original • Finish the story

Lesson 2: Wrap-up Approaches to reading Pre-text • Introduction and lead-in e.g. get the learners interested in the topic through initial discussion. • First task (pre-reading) e.g. prediction, read questions about the text etc. Text • Tasks to focus on overall text meaning, reading for gist • Tasks to focus on fast reading for scanning. • Tasks to focus on general meaning • Tasks to focus on finer meaning • Tasks to focus on language details Post – text • Freer follow on task focusing on productive skills • Recap and revision, closure with follow –up HW or self - study

  9. Lesson 3: Teaching GrammarGuided Discovery Approach • Situational presentation. • Text – based presentation. • Get something to notice the patterns. • Focus on meaning before form ( within a context). • Concept Checking Questions ( CCQs). Link to the approach
