  13. Mrs. Malone Block Day Lab Safety Safety Goggles Why do we wear safety goggles? Preventing Eye Injuries: Wear safety goggles when handling chemicals, glassware, or sharp objects. Do not rub your eyes with your hands until you wash them. Responding to Eye Injuries Inform the teacher immediately Wash eyes for at least 15 minutes using the eye-wash. Go to nurse if eyes become red or itchy.

Preventing Fires: Do not light fires near flammable chemicals or material Do not play with matches, lighters, or hot plates. Pull hair back into ponytail Do not wear loose or baggy clothing Responding to Fires: Inform the teacher immediately Use the fire extinguisher to put out fires; do NOT use on humans. Suffocate the fire by covering it with a non-flammable container or use the fire blanket.

  18. Clothing Wear: • Goggles/safety glasses • Closed-toed shoes • Clothing made of natural based fiber such as cotton • Tie back long hair Do NOT Wear: • Sandals • Jewelry • Loose or Baggy clothing

  19. Waste Disposal • First ask your teacher where/how to dispose of waste. • Never pour anything down the drain unless you are told to do so. • A waste container will be supplied for substance that cannot go down the drain

  20. Reasons for proper waste disposal • Hazardous chemicals can lead to pollution of ground water, lakes, rivers, etc. • Plants and animals will die if they are exposed to hazardous chemical waste. • Serious health problems could occur if hazardous waste finds its way into drinking water.

  21. What is a Scientist? • Close your eyes and imagine a scientist. Try to imagine: • What does the scientist look like? • What is the scientist wearing? • What equipment is the scientist using? • Where is the scientist? • Now draw what you imagined on your paper • Add as much detail to your scientist as you can • Write a description of your scientist on your paper • Be prepared to share your work
